How are your garden tomatoes growing this year? Vegetable gardeners often find that they have "help" from caterpillars in pruning their tomato plants. The tobacco hornworm (Manduca sexta), shown here, and the tomato hornworm are the caterpillars of two related sphinx moth species. Their caterpillars both eat plants that are in the nightshade plant family, including tomato and tobacco, and look strikingly similar. When their caterpillars are full size (finger length and robust), they crawl into the soil and pupate, then emerge as moths.

"🌿✨ Companion planting in action with Chenopodium, Basil, Nasturtiums, and Lettuce—a perfect synergy for a healthy, thriving garden! 🌱💧 🔸 Chenopodium (Goosefoot) works as a natural mulch by shading the soil, keeping it cool and moist, while its deep roots break up compact soil, improving nutrient availability for shallow-rooted plants like lettuce. 🔸 Basil is not just for your kitchen—it repels harmful insects like aphids, whiteflies, and mosquitoes, acting as a bodyguard for your lettuce. Its aromatic oils also enhance the flavor of nearby crops! 🔸 Nasturtiums are a magnet for aphids, acting as a 'trap crop.' By luring pests away from your lettuce, they protect delicate leaves from damage while attracting beneficial insects like ladybugs and pollinators. 🔸 Lettuce, a fast-growing crop, benefits from the shade provided by taller companions, preventing bolting in hot weather. 🌟 Fun fact: Nasturtiums and basil both produce chemical compounds called terpenes, which confuse pests’ sense of smell, helping create a natural pest-free zone in your garden! 🐞🌼 #CompanionPlanting #RegenerativeGardening #GreenAffair #NaturalPestControl #OrganicFarming #SoilHealth #PlantWisdom #SustainableGardening"

As plants in containers grow, they use valuable nutrients in the soil that they cannot replenish naturally. Ideally, you should transplant ornamental shrubs or roses growing in containers every few years to refresh the soil and replace lost nutrients. But hügelkultur containers change all this. Instead of needing to transplant plants from an old container to a new one, hügelkultur containers create permanent, self-watering, nutrient-rich, long-term homes for all plant babies. A hügelkultur container will grow anything from vegetables and perennials to large shrubs or annuals. As the material in the container breaks down, microbial life and essential nutrients, such as potassium, phosphorous and nitrogen, are released into the soil and absorbed by plant roots. Over time, as the organic material decomposes, topsoil must be added. But the decaying wood at the bottom will continue to act as a sponge, keeping roots nice and moist. As long as it's well-draining, any container can have a long and useful life as a hügelkultur garden! #gardening #garden #hugelkultur #plantcontainer #GardenCultureMagazine #growingplants #growingtips
