A global hiring report in the design and build space landed on my desk this morning and the findings are encouraging. Especially about hiring design talent in the Philippines (and Southeast Asia). 🇵🇭✨ Here’s the summary: The Philippines is making waves in the global hiring scene, especially for creative roles. It's not just about the tech anymore; design is taking the spotlight. Why does this matter? Well, it's a big deal because it shows how diverse and rich the talent pool is in the Philippines. Designers there are not just skilled; they bring a fresh, vibrant energy and perspective to projects, something the world is starting to notice and appreciate more and more. And here's the thing – with the world leaning heavily into distributed teams, the barriers are lower than ever. Agencies and consultancies, big and small, are looking at the way they work and are identifying the Philippines as a goldmine of creative, design talent. Why do companies need to hire senior people to do mid-level work? Especially in Fortune 500 companies. In design, fresh talent often gets passed over in favor of senior designers, even for roles that don’t need senior-level expertise. It’s not that senior designers can’t handle these tasks – they can – but what does this signal to the industry? Bringing in fresh perspectives could open up bold new directions, but too often, companies play it safe by hiring senior ICs to handle work that mid-level designers could easily manage. What’s the impact then? ◆ For fresh talent, it’s fewer chances to gain experience. ◆ For experienced designers, it’s missing out on roles where they can tackle bigger challenges that match their skills. In November 2023, I took a leap of faith.... I moved to Japan because I recently got married, simply put, I wanted to be with my wife. It has also helped me a lot to reconnect with my own culture again after the years I have spent abroad. As I set sail on my journey to find work in the Far East, I noticed that a lot has been happening, sadly, in the Tech sector, where so many talented designers have been "let go," which I can imagine feels sour, not to mention frustrating.... I myself have been proactive in my search, with results, and I'm on the road to landing a job soon. But I wanted to share some points I learned during my journey, living and being challenged by our IT landscape. Some tips I want to share with junior and mid-level designers: 1. Be proactive in your search; don't just apply for a job but also reach out and show you are willing to demonstrate your value. 2. Propose a design challenge where you can collaborate and demonstrate your design process to a company. 3. Learn from design consultants and ask where you can add value. What is the company struggling with, and where can you be of service with your knowledge? 4. Sometimes, a case study presentation can also showcase your skills in a more structured and professional way, highlighting your proudest work. 5. Connect with other talented designers and ask for tips on how they achieved their dream job and what their strategy was. I would like to ask my network to share this, so many people can have a chance to see this post and feel a sense of hope in these hard times.
