After working through the first chunk of phyl terry's #NeverSearchAlone process, I believe I have defined a strong Candidate Market Fit for myself and I think it's a good time to share it. I am targetting a remote Sr. Software Engineer - Backend position at a Series C/D startup in the social impact space where I can contribute to an engineering culture of sustainable long-term growth. There's the TL;DR, but what does that all mean? First things first, what is a Candidate Market Fit? If you have ever taken a product to market, you have probably done some research about how that product will fit in the market. Take that base concept, apply it to the job search, and get as specific as you can and you end up with a Candidate Market Fit statement. But why get so specific? We tend to be great at being "expansive" but not "reductive." IE: if I say I can do anything backend for anyone, that doesn't really give a good idea of what I can do. But if I get specific with my goal you might look at it and say "Hey, this isn't exactly what Kyle's looking for, but it's pretty close so let's reach out." Now let's break down MY Candidate Market Fit. Sr. Software Engineer - Backend: I have 6 years of backend engineering experience, mostly with Ruby, Golang, and Scala. I also do some experience with leading projects and mentorship. I am also willing to take on more of a full stack position if it it backend leaning, but I will be learning the frontend portion on the job. Series C/D startup: I like having my impact felt. In larger, more established companies, it can be difficult to really do anything that has notable impacts on the company and culture as a whole. That said, I want some stability that can be difficult to find in a series A/B startup. Social Impact Space: This is an umbrella term I like to use to refer to anything that is truly mission driven. I am fond of saying that I want to make more than just money. I want to make a difference. Social impact to me includes, but is not limited to, Socially Conscious Fintech, Green Energy, Education, Healthcare, etc. Contributing to an engineering culture of sustainable long-term growth: My goal at the end of every ticket is for the code to be better for the next person who touches it. This means I push for writing docs targeting different audiences. I try to make developer tools to better test trickier areas of the code before the Pull Request step. I bring subject matter experts in to my Pull Requests (with their permission). I reach out to other teams if I think there is a risk that something I am working on will impact them and share my design docs with them. I write unit tests. By doing these things, I try to guide my team towards a culture that pays off it's tech debt before it can accrue interest so that we can spend more time doing engaging work and preventing burnout.
