This is a huge misconception. We see human trafficking taking place everyday, sometimes even multiple times a day right in our own backyards. Human trafficking is much larger than just forced work, these are individuals who are targeted, and given false promises. Often times they have their passports or documents seized, forcing them to stay and work as they have no ability to leave. They were promised certain jobs and then presented with something completely different. They are threatened, their families threatened, and often they have no one to turn to for help. They are forced to work as they fear the repercussions, and are forced to live under an individuals control. Human trafficking is not just an international problem, in the US alone there are 1,091,000 people who live in modern-day slavery conditions (Walk free/ Hope for Justice, 2023). In 2023, the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC) received more than 18,400 reports of possible child sex trafficking. But the true number is likely much higher.⁠ ⁠ Why? Trafficking is often underreported due to the fear, manipulation, and control that traffickers hold over their victims. Children may not recognize they’re being exploited, or they’re too scared to ask for help.
