According to a recent study from the American Hotel & Lodging Association, 76% of all hotels surveyed are reporting staffing shortages. The most critical staffing need is housekeeping, with 50% ranking it as their top hiring need. This is up 9 points, compared to just 6 months ago. Do your housekeeping team, the planet AND your guests a big favor, by offering them the option to skip a clean, and plant a tree. Hotel Workers Wages Hit Highs Thank you Karen Magee for sharing the wsj article where this graphic appeared: “Hotel owners have been on an epic hiring spree. Yet even after clawing back hundreds of thousands of jobs during the past two years, the industry is still light on staff and often struggling to adapt. Daily housekeeping for all guests, room service and other amenities that were reduced or eliminated during the pandemic are still lacking at many properties. At the same time, hotels across the U.S. have held their daily room rates near all-time highs this winter, in part to offset the increase in wages to lure workers back. Hotels will collectively pay $123 billion in compensation this year, up more than 20% from 2019, according to the American Hotel & Lodging Association. Some hotel owners now fret that a guest backlash could be building as smaller staffs can compromise the level of service and higher wages threaten to push the cost of travel even higher. “If we’re expecting empathy from consumers, we’re not going to get it,” said Bob Habeeb, chief executive officer of Maverick Hotels & Restaurants, which owns about two dozen hotels, mostly in Chicago and the Midwest. Habeeb expects he will need to increase wages across his hotel portfolio by 10% this year—a cost that will be passed in part on to guests. “Consumers are going to have to pay more,” he said. The leisure-and-hospitality category has bolstered U.S. hiring growth for much of the past two years. The industry’s appetite for even more workers could help sustain growth in the broader hiring market, said Nancy Vanden Houten, a lead U.S. economist at Oxford Economics. The severity of hotel worker shortages when U.S. travel ramped up in 2021 has eased. But the industry is still below pandemic staffing levels. Employment in the accommodation sector is down 9% from early 2020, according to government data. A number of reasons account for the lingering shortage. Workers are often hesitant to return to the hotel industry after the mass layoffs in 2020, said Chip Rogers, CEO of the American Hotel & Lodging Association. Many switched to other industries with big pay raises. Immigration laws are also capping the amount of seasonal workers the industry can hire. https://lnkd.in/gqrUDpMm

Most US Hotels Understaffed Despite All-Time High Pay: A recent industry survey reveals that a majority of US hotels, over 66%, are still struggling with a lack of staff. As a result, hotel operators are resorting to increased wages and a range of enticing benefits to both attract and retain qualified employees. In the past half-year, wages have been raised by 82% of participants, reaching an all-time high average for US hotels in December 2023. Furthermore, increased flexibility in working hours is being provided by 59%, while 33% are extending their benefits. Nevertheless, 72% report ongoing challenges in filling vacant positions. 67% of the individuals surveyed reported a shortage of staff, while 12% indicated that their shortage is so severe that it is hindering their operations. Among their various staffing requirements, housekeeping emerged as the most significant, with 48% identifying it as their foremost hiring need. In May 2023, 82% of the survey participants reported facing a staffing shortage. However, the latest figures show an improvement in these numbers. The average number of positions that respondents in the latest survey are trying to fill per property remains consistent with May 2023, with an average of nine vacancies per property. However, this represents an increase compared to the average of seven vacancies per property recorded in January 2023. US hotel employees are currently experiencing unprecedented career opportunities due to persistent staffing difficulties. There are over 70,000 vacant positions in the hotel industry nationwide. Additionally, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that as of December 2023, the average hourly wages for hotel workers reached a record high of $23.91. Hotel wages have experienced a more rapid growth than overall wages in the economy during the pandemic, in addition to improved benefits and flexibility in the hotel industry. According to the American Hotel & Lodging Association (AHLA) President & CEO, improvements in wages, benefits, and career advancement have led to a slow but positive change in the hotel workforce situation. However, due to labor shortages across the country, hoteliers are struggling to fill tens of thousands of positions. AHLA executive stated that this issue will continue to burden our members until Congress takes action. He urges lawmakers to address this urgent matter by implementing an H-2B returning worker exemption, passing the Asylum Seeker Work Authorization Act, and enacting the H-2 Improvements to Relieve Employers (HIRE) Act. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, in December, the job openings in the United States amounted to 9 million, while the available workforce of unemployed individuals to occupy those positions was only 6.3 million. Congress can help hoteliers address workforce shortages by taking the following actions: * Enhancing… #hotel #resort #travelusa #News

An untold story . . . During job, the company had a policy of providing shared accommodation for the one-year period due to frequent travel across different manufacturing plants and dealerships for training. In the second month, Her roommate tested positive for COVID-19. Concerned about our safety, She requested separate accommodation from HR until the roommate recovered. Initially, HR instructed her to arrange alternative accommodation at our own expense. Given that plants are in remote locations, finding suitable accommodation was extremely challenging and stressful. After spending a day in a lounge, management finally confirmed new accommodation for her. Fearing exposure to COVID-19, she also asked HR to assist in retrieving her belongings from the shared room. The company decided to keep the roommate in the same room and allowed her to move around the hotel without informing the staff about her condition. HR refused her request for help and instructed her to retrieve our luggage by themselves. When she continued to seek assistance, HR stopped responding to her emails. Left with no other options, she approached the CHRO to intervene and requested the hotel management to ensure her roommate quarantined herself to protect others' safety. In response, HR threatened to terminate her employment if she contacted anyone else in the office or hotel. That experience taught us that even a reputable company might not always ensure employee welfare. #linkedin #newpost #career #firstjob #CA #Management #politics #Noscared

If you're not using a Travel Advisor, who is monitoring all the aspects of your vacation? By partnering with me, I will always be monitoring every aspect of your vacation! Here is a story from the Travel Market Report about the hotel worker strikes: Thousands of hotel workers across the U.S. went on strike on Sunday, the first of many days of planned work stoppages that could greatly impact guest experiences over the next few weeks. Members of the UNITE HERE union, which includes employees of Hilton, Hyatt, and Marriott in 24 cities including Boston, San Francisco, Honolulu, and Seattle, went on strike on Sunday, during the busy Labor Day weekend, as the union continues contract negotiations with the hotel companies. The growing list of properties includes major hotels such as Fairmont Copley Plaza and Hilton Boston Park Plaza in Boston, The Royal Hawaiian and Sheraton Waikiki in Honolulu, and the Grand Hyatt Union Square and Hilton Union Square in San Francisco. UNITE HERE says each strike will last two or three days and that strikes in other cities, including Baltimore, Oakland, and Providence, could “begin at any time.” The full list of properties impacted is available through the UNITE HERE website. UNITE HERE is seeking higher wages and a reversal of COVID-era cuts, which it says are still in place. It said that even with room rates at record highs and gross operating profits over $100 billion, hotel staffing is down, and employees are pressured “to go faster and faster instead of calling in more people to work.” “Too many hotels still haven’t restored standard services that guests deserve, like automatic daily housekeeping and room service. Workers aren’t making enough to support their families,” UNITE HERE International President Gwen Mills said. Hilton, Marriott, and Hyatt hotel groups have not responded to TMR’s requests for comment. UNITE HERE is the union that represented Los Angeles hotel workers during their strike in July 2023. The union was able to record contracts at several hotels during those negotiations.
