How to make a career choice when you are undecided? Thousands of career options are waiting for you to pick them. Having lots of options is wonderful — but can also be overwhelming. That’s why it helps to take it one piece at a time. Follow these SIX Steps to get focused on what you want to do in your life : 1. Think deeply about yourself : Find a quiet space and sit down with pen and paper, think deeply and write about your values, hobbies and soft skills. 2. Create a broad list of careers : Take some career tests and write down and have a good read-through. Now you match your characteristics and your personal values to these careers. 3. Start investigating your list : Now that you have some options to explore, it’s time for some basic research into the careers you have on your list right now. 4. Shorten your list : Narrow down your list based on your research helps focus your decision. Aim to create a list of 5 potential careers. 5. Talk to people in those fields of study : Reaching out to those who have chosen your potential future career can give you insight of the job. 6. Make your career choice : Evaluate you goals and understand how they impact your professional and personal life. Now you put together the research you have done into decision and choose your right career. Career planning isn’t just deciding what job you want, but also how you are going to live your life? The most underestimated aspect of career planning: Understanding how your career intersects with other life roles… When making career plans, it's important to remember that your career does not exist in isolation. We all play many roles in life - partner, parent, friend, community member, etc. An integrated career plan considers how these various roles intersect and influence each other. Unpopular opinion: you don’t owe anyone an explanation other than being true to yourself, doing what you feel is right for you and your career. Take me as an example. If you haven’t noticed my LinkedIn profile, I’ve made many changes throughout my career and I don’t regret it at all. In fact, I’ve been called out as a job hopper which doesn’t bother me at all. Because at the end of the day, I’ve made the decision to put myself FIRST. I’ve been intentional with every move throughout my career which continues to serve me in my later years. At the same, this has helped with numerous career pivots as I felt strongly about having a diverse portfolio, one that allowed me to deal with different challenges. Now this may not be for everyone. Some may be comfortable in a role for no more than 2-3 years, while others prefer to be a lifer with their current employer. The key is NOT to stay stagnant, that is not allowing yourself to grow and progress in the way that you are meant to throughout your career. So if reading this and knowing deep inside your current role is no longer as fulfilling, you are STUCK! …but that doesn’t mean you should dismiss your thoughts and “tough it out” for the next 10 years or so. It’s never too late to do something about it. Let this be a reminder that you deserve more, much more than what you are getting now.
