About 98.5% of business is about relationships and communication, not strategy. When people say “Culture eats strategy for breakfast” - that’s why. This includes sales, marketing, business development. If you’re finding any of that challenging, it’s likely that working on improving your communication skills will have a massive positive impact on your results. Did you ever buy something from someone you didn’t trust, or couldn’t communicate with? This is why it’s so stressful to buy a used car from a stranger! — #BusinessDevelopment #GrowthMarketing #CommunicationSkills #LeadershipSkills #RelationalIntelligence

🚀 Hey everyone! Let's talk about taking your partnerships to the next level with collaborative strategy development. Here's how to make it happen: - **Clear Roles and Responsibilities**: Start by outlining who does what. Clearly define each partner's roles, responsibilities, and contributions to ensure everyone is on the same page and working towards common goals. - **Identify Joint Initiatives**: Collaboration is all about synergy. Identify areas where your strengths align and where you can achieve more together than separately. Whether it's launching a new product, entering a new market, or tackling a shared challenge, joint initiatives maximize impact and drive results. - **Effective Resource Allocation**: Resources are precious, so make sure you allocate them wisely. Determine what resources – whether it's finances, manpower, or technology – each partner brings to the table and how they'll be utilized to support your collaborative efforts. - **Establish Measurable Metrics**: Success isn't just a feeling; it's measurable. Define key metrics and milestones that will gauge the progress and impact of your collaborative efforts. Whether it's revenue growth, market share, customer satisfaction, or any other relevant KPI, tracking metrics keeps you accountable and focused on achieving results. Andre Du Plessis shares thoughts on: When is Business Development successful? Business Development isn't complicated. It's all about making the business more successful. Therefore, it can't be a standalone concept; it needs to be seen in the context of the larger business vision and priorities. That sounds simple, but in reality that clarity can be hard to come by. Every business today has to deal with an unending list of competing priorities and stakeholders, all coming at them in a rapidly changing environment. There's no way to do it all, so really understanding the bigger picture is how you can be strategic about where you invest your resources for maximum impact. Business development therefore needs to strike a balance between a strategic vision, coupled with the necessary tactical agility. Which begs the question: How can we do that? Start by understanding the difference between Sales and Business Development - Business Development needs to be focussed on identifying and creating opportunities (be it new markets, partnerships etc.). Sales in turn needs to focus on identifying and cultivating leads before ultimately converting them into customers. The one is strategic, the other tactical, but the success of both is clearly dependent on each other. Create a Business Development strategy - start by identifying and researching your stakeholders (both internal & external) as they ultimately determine what “success” looks like. Complement this with customer and market research in the context of the stakeholders. Armed with this context, set and align goals that will reliably move your organization toward its strategic goals while serving its stakeholders. Then move over to action by identifying prospective customers and cultivate those relationships in the long run. You then need to constantly look at how your strategy is performing and find ways to experiment, tweak, and improve. Keep your customers at the center of your strategy - they are simply your most important stakeholder, so you need to understand them at a deep level in order to build long lasting relationships. Finally, appreciate that your customers also change, so it is important to regularly revisit your assumptions around them. Want to go deeper on this topic? Business Development | Driving SME Growth through strategic, targeted and effective sales and marketing. STRATEGY | PLANNING | IMPLEMENTATION | SUPPORT
When I work with clients, I prefer to think of them as partners. Why? Because we feed into each other. Together, we bounce around ideas, figure out the next steps, and build strategies focused on their goals. And that’s why it works—it’s a two-way relationship built on collaboration. I once had a client who gave me zero feedback. It felt like I was working in a vacuum—just pushing things out without any real dialogue. That’s not how I like to work. I get invested in my clients’ success. I want to constantly talk through where their business is at—what’s working, what’s challenging—and use that as the foundation to build our plans. When we work together like this, we can create strategies that are fully aligned to them and their business, and that can go on to really make an impact. And when we’re in sync, it’s not just a more successful relationship—it’s far more enjoyable for both of us! (This picture is me celebrating the first sale on a client’s brand new website—just hours after launching. I think I was more excited to toast with my bubbles than they were!) #ClientPartnerships #CollaborativeGrowth #BusinessStrategy #ClientSuccess #StrategicGrowth #TogetherWeGrow
