Master the art of on-air delivery. From live shots to long form, your work will turn heads. Voice coaching will get you to where you want to be.
As I gear up to start my Election Prep and Coverage series later this week, some wise words from Joy Mayer:
Journalists, who is your political coverage designed for, and who are you leaving out? There are smart, engaged, curious people who have VERY different relationships to political news. You likely know a *lot* of people who've been continually refreshing their feeds for updates and predictions about the presidential debate and have their watch party planned. Those people are the unusual ones. Other people are more like the former journalist who asked me yesterday if Harris and Trump were going to have a debate this fall. His new career means he's not looking at headlines very often. He consumes at least some news daily, but he misses things. Other people are disengaged. They couldn’t name the vice presidential candidates, they tune out from politics on purpose and don't see that as a problem. Some of them will tune in next month and decide to vote, and some won't. If your coverage is aimed only at political junkies, you're likely missing the majority of folks.

Strategy Director at RoyceComm / Australian Government Advisory Committee on Tourism - Thrive 2030 / Board Member, Mornington Peninsula Regional Tourism
Geesch.. Say what you will at times about #auspol debate & ocassions of lack of focus on the things that matter to the everyday Australian. The Time Magazine cover in the States has been the dominating 24-hr media cycle issue in the US presidential contest race. It’s a great cover! And no, it isn’t Melania or even Camilla, as a participant in the debate inferred?! 😳 It also sat alongside the apparent, cyber hacked and technically flawed Twitter / X interview of the ‘times’ between Elon & Donald J Trump. If no other outcome from that episode it has helpfully shifted more magazine copies of TIME off a newsstand. This ‘media event’ tells us a lot - or maybe very little? That the latent influence of the mainstream legacy media can still prevail, particularly when it intersects with the new form. That ‘good content’ in a variety of forms, still really, really matters. That no matter the comms platform, an ability for content to ‘frame’ a situation and/or moment (a tight US Presidential race) can influence and in particular if social media can easily feed and carry it. Just ask #raygun Maybe another future case study in media and content management in the political contest, albeit it is the US! Also speaks well on how Australian media managers and influencers are generally pretty good at keeping relative check on issues in our own patch & wheelhouse of influence. #auspol #usa #uspolitics #trump #kamala #media #msm #spin #uselection #timemagazine #X #issuemanagement #communicationsstrategy RoyceComm #planetamerica

The Land’s founder and editor Lee Chilcote shared thoughts on local news in Cleveland, inspired by a podcast series about gaps in local reporting: This series on NPR's Marketplace, "Democracy in the Desert," is worth following. They're covering news deserts (so-called places without strong local reporting or where it's declined) across the country. Make no mistake: Cleveland is one of those places. We're lucky to have a daily paper, lots of other media in town, and a growing nonprofit news sector, but we don't have the reporters we used to and it shows. These stories are interesting because they show a pretty direct link between local news and democratic participation. In the story that aired this morning, election fraud was discovered not by reporters, who were overwhelmed trying to cover too many stories, but by political scientists. Even the fraud wasn't well-reported. The researchers said, as a result, voter turnout in a special election was low. Signal, Documenters CLE, The Land, Axios Cleveland, the Buckeye Flame, and others are part of the solution. So are legacy papers like Cleveland.com, Scene etc. when they do their jobs. At The Land we decided two years ago not to try to be the Arbiters of Truth with a tiny staff, but to start a community journalism program. Since then, we've trained nearly 100 people and published about 100 stories written by local community members. OK, they're not necessarily hard-hitting, groundbreaking accountability stories, but they're good solutions-based neighborhood stories that deserve to be told. This is not an advertisement, just truth. I think it took years to get us into this mess and it'll take a while to get us out. That's my gut. I've been blessed to be involved in local news for a while and to learn from people who know way more than me the skills of a reporter/editor. But I'm interested to know what you think. Do you see weak spots and bright spots in local news? What are they?
