Teaching leaders how to redesign ordinary work habits and their offices for high-performance and happiness - Follow me for posts on transformative work habits & systems
Today is myth busting day!
Did you ever hear that it takes 21 days to form a new habit?
And that the equation for a new habit to last is:
↪️ Frequency+Repetition=success!
This is NOT how habit formation works, and relying solely on grit and perseverance as tools for creating new habits is a recipe for failed dreams.
Instead, make the judo move and lean into the fact that we humans are emotional at nature.
It turns out that leveraging emotions are your unknown secret weapon for building new habits AND making them last.
And I’ll let you in on a another little tidbit —> Celebrating small achievement is theeee way to go!
If this tickles your fancy and wanna learn how it works, and how to apply it at work to make you rock your day, then sign up for The New Habits newsletter that drops tomorrow!
I just signed up for my first ever Brazilian Jiu Jitsu tournament 🤯
With 8.5 years of training under my 3-stripe purple belt, I'm definitely late to the competing game.
So, why haven't I done this until now?
Truthfully, for most of the last 8.5 years, I've had zero interest in competing.
I was never doing this for medals or accolades, just purely for learning how to defend myself in scary situations, so I could teach other women how to keep themselves safe.
Plus, I was going through IVF on and off for about 4 of those years, I've dealt with a slew of injuries, and oh yeah, COVID was somewhere in there — all of which took competing off the table.
But as I get closer to brown belt...
(Interlude: for those wondering, the belts go white ➡ blue ➡ purple ➡ brown ➡ black — and in jiu jitsu, unlike some other martial arts, it can take 10+ years to get to black belt)
...it kind of feels like my time to compete is now or never.
And I know myself. If I get to black belt having never competed, I will regret it.
My whole company exists to empower women to build and run the businesses of their dreams. To take the big, bold steps to be fully aligned with their values and with who they are, so they can attract the clients they want. To build a business and life without regrets.
So, when I had a lightbulb moment last week that I'd be living with regrets if I don't take this step, the answer became obvious.
I'm not gonna lie: I'm terrified.
There's a pretty high chance of injury in a competition, and I kind of already feel like my body is being held together with duct tape 🤣 And I worry about the potential negative effects it could have on my mental health if I don't do well in the tournament (which is likely, considering I'll be probably be competing against women who've been competing since they were white belts).
But taking big, bold, values-driven steps means facing our fears head-on and conquering them, knowing that it's the only way to get us closer to living in full alignment with who we want to be.
I'll report back in a little over 5 weeks on how it went! 💪
Wrapped up a fantastic morning on the mats, and now I’m gearing up for something truly special tomorrow…
I think we’re about to take the concept of our judo mastermind group to a whole new level.
Breaking free of the ‘how we’ve always done it mentality’.
Tomorrow, our Dojo LaunchPad Mastermind Members will gather at the luxurious Foxhills Country Club for an experience we’re excited to prepare for our coaches.
This isn’t just another meeting.
It’s a day designed to completely transform how we approach our clubs – and our lives. We’re diving deep into the three R’s that will make or break your success: Recruitment, Revenue, and Retention.
It’s not just about strategy.
We will also tackle the mental roadblocks that keep us from achieving our true potential. Because let’s face it – the biggest battles aren’t fought on the mats; they’re fought in our minds.
And after a day of intense learning, growing, and strategising, our mastermind members will get to unwind in style – spa, gourmet dinner, drinks, and an overnight stay at an amazing hotel and spa!
We think this is pretty cool and the perfect way to set our coaches up for an incredible Q4.
I’ll be sharing more about the day, so stay tuned. If you’ve ever wondered what it takes to truly elevate your judo club and your mindset, this is it.
It's almost Friday, and another week is nearly over.
Here are my weekly wins! 🏆
Happy marketing clients, are there any sweeter words to a marketer than no amends, go ahead and schedule? 😉
Getting to the final interview stage for a role I'd like. (technically last week but waiting to hear back this week)
Speaking to inspirational people about opportunities.
Staying behind in karate this week for the advanced class, more time in lessons means my grading in June is less daunting!
Coffee with an artist tomorrow to talk about my passion project around "Ghosts in the North East."
What are your wins this week?

🥋💪 Been debating all day whether to post this or not, but everything is a life lesson. Last night, I participated in my first Jiu Jitsu tournament. I was super nervous and jittery, but I couldn't back out. I knew I had to go through with it. I've worked very hard on my JJ for the last six months and also put in a ton of work on my conditioning and strength training. Still, the nerves and jitters got to me, made a stupid mistake very early in the match, and got tapped out in seconds. Damn! So frustrating... My family showed up to watch, and I felt super embarrassed.
😅 Been watching this video over and over, and it's crystal clear what I did wrong. Ugh! Still mad, but hey, there are a ton of lessons I learned and some I can teach my kids. That's the whole point. So, after I gathered myself, I made sure FJ (my son) saw me find my competitor, shake his hand, and congratulate him. Woke up this morning early, called my coach, and asked him to meet me at the gym to go over the mistakes. Life lesson is "get back up! learn! try again!"
👊 Takeaways: It was a super fun experience. Still enjoy the heck out of sharing my Jiu Jitsu adventure with my son. It's our thing; it's our quality time. I need to always carry myself gracefully because he is watching.

I used to make the mistake of setting unattainable New Year’s resolutions that where impossible for me to achieve in just 1 year.
For the past 2 years I have organised my goals as:
1. Strategical goals (Long-term)
2. Tactical goals (Short-term)
Strategical goals might look like: Become a Jiu Jitsu blackbelt, speak fluent Mandarin, be in the best physical shape of my life.
Tactical goals example: Compete in 3x Jiu Jitsu competitions, study Mandarin 2 hours per week and train weights 4 times per week.
Creating short-term goals that help towards the bigger picture has helped me a lot, it has become satisfying being able to add ticks to the empty circles on my notes app, as well as a great place to reflect on how the past year has played out.
I hope everyone reading this can tick off all of their tactical goals in 2024! LFG🔥

Hello Social Media! I'm trying to do a better job of sharing things beyond just financial knowledge - so here's a little about me...
👋 As most of you know, I'm Robert Montes, and when I'm not crunching numbers or diving 401(k) Plan Documents, I'm often rolling on the mats practicing **jiu jitsu**! 🤼♂️🥋

- I've been hooked on this martial art for years now. The "gentle" art of jiu jitsu combines strategy, technique, and mental fortitude—it's like human chess! ♟️
- You'll find me at the Missoula Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (mostly getting beat up) an average of 3-4 times per week training and coaching.
-Whether it's drilling techniques, sparring, or working on beating my arch nemesis, (and also one of my best friends) Sam, I'm all in! 💪
🏆 **Local Tournaments**:
- But wait, there's more! I don't just train—I love competing too. 🏅
- You're sure to catch me at local jiu jitsu tournaments, where the adrenaline is high, and the camaraderie among fellow practitioners is unbeatable. 🙌
🤜🤛 **Why Jiu Jitsu?**:
- It's not just about physical prowess; it's about mental resilience, problem-solving, and discipline.
- Plus, the jiu jitsu community is like a second family. We celebrate victories together and support each other during setbacks. 🤝
So, if you're ever up for a friendly roll or want to chat about the latest techniques, hit me up! 🤙 Let's connect and share our love for the beautiful sport of Jiu Jitsu 🥋🔥

Good morning, everyone,
As I was reflecting on my LinkedIn journey, it struck me that I’ve never shared a significant part of my life: my passion for Judo. For those unfamiliar, Judo is a martial art that originated in Japan, known as "the gentle way." It’s a sport that emphasizes using your opponent’s strength to your advantage, and for me, it has been transformative.
Back in my 100-level days, I remember feeling hesitant about joining the sport. I had watched my friend endure grueling training sessions at the dojo, and honestly, it scared me. The physical demands seemed overwhelming, and I wasn’t sure if I had what it took. But something within me shifted, and I decided to take the leap. Looking back, I’m so glad I did because it’s been one of the most exhilarating experiences of my life.
Judo has taught me invaluable lessons in perseverance, discipline, and commitment. There were countless moments when I felt like quitting, but the sense of community at the dojo kept me going. The people around me pushed me to my limits, not out of competition, but out of genuine care to see me grow.
I recently reached a milestone that I’m incredibly proud of—I graduated from a white belt to yellow some months ago. Some expected me to move up to orange, but I chose yellow because it’s a level I can confidently defend and master. And you know what? I’ve realized that the color of the belt doesn’t matter as much as the growth that comes with it. I can now hold my own, even against people with higher belts, ( not all the time though 😂😂)and that’s a victory in itself.
Judo has reminded me that progress isn’t always about speed or rank; it’s about staying committed to your journey, no matter the pace. It’s a lesson that goes beyond martial arts—it’s about life.
So, for anyone in my network who practices martial arts or is thinking about starting, let’s connect! I’d love to hear your stories and share experiences.
What are your thoughts on perseverance and taking small steps to achieve your goals? Let’s spark a conversation in the comments!

“Every metric you use should have an Operational Definition.” An OD has:
1. A criterion — the thing you want to measure.
2. Test procedure — how will you measure the thing?
3. Decision rule — how will you decide if the thing you’re measuring should be included in the count?

This is a look back at some of Commoncog's best ideas over the past year, as well as a look forward to some of the things we're working on for 2024.
The big thing, though? The next few weeks will be FILLED with essays on how to become data driven. I'm excited to dive in. https://lnkd.in/gG3N4H6f

As a kid, I faced bullying.
It was a daily challenge, one that chipped away at my confidence.
But I wasn't going to let it define me.
I landed my first paid job delivering newspapers.
Not just for pocket money, but with a mission: to fund my judo lessons.
Each paper round brought me closer to my goal.
To fund my own plan against bullying.
Judo lessons.
With every throw and grapple on the judo mat, I grew stronger—not just physically, but mentally too.
The discipline, the focus, the resilience; judo reshaped my world.
By the time I earned my black belt, I wasn't just equipped to defend myself—I was transformed.
I stood taller, spoke louder, and faced the world with newfound confidence.
This journey taught me more than how to throw a good sweep; it taught me that with the right focus and determination, we can flip any adversity into strength.
Your past doesn't define you. Your courage to change does.
