Balancing work and childcare during the summer holidays can be challenging, a six-week break and limited leave options, it can feel overwhelming. Some parents save all their annual leave to use throughout the summer, while others rely on a network of friends and family for support. What many parents may not know is that they are entitled to parental leave from their job. Each parent can take up to 18 weeks of parental leave for each child until the child turns 18, with a maximum of 4 weeks of leave per year for each child. Michigan’s Tri-Share program is a pioneering public-private partnership aimed at easing childcare costs for working parents. Launched in 2021, the program splits childcare costs equally between employers, the state, and parents. Initial results show significant reductions in childcare expenses for families and enhanced employee retention for participating businesses. Lets discuss the balancing act of childcare during half term... As I watch my little ones embark on a day of adventure with my husband, I can't help but ponder the immense challenge many working parents face: the struggle of childcare. It's a topic that hits close to home, especially during school breaks when the usual routines are disrupted. Consider this: while most schools enjoy 13 to 15 weeks of holidays, the average worker is entitled to just 5.6 weeks of paid annual leave. That's a stark contrast, leaving many of us grappling with how to bridge the gap. In theory, it's a simple equation: juggling work commitments alongside the responsibilities of parenthood. But in practice, it's a delicate balancing act with no easy answers. How do we make it work? How do we ensure we're present for our children while meeting our professional obligations? Flexibility is often touted as the solution, and I'm incredibly grateful to have the support to work flexibly at The Wilf Ward Family Trust. But where do we draw the line? How do we navigate those murky waters between accommodating flexibility and pushing the boundaries? I would love to hear your experiences, your struggles, and your solutions.
