Caring for our most vulnerable children is perhaps the most crucial role of local authorities. Yet, they face a myriad of challenges in children's residential care, including rising demand, lack of supply in the right places, and a market reliant on debt-financed business models driven by scale. These factors are leading to poor outcomes for children. As you have most likely seen and heard, both the City and State Executive Budgets are now out, and both our Mayor and Governor have delivered addresses regarding each. As advocates, we are working hard to meet with leaders and elected officials to push forward the best investments for families and children, writing testimony, producing compelling content, and driving campaigns that give advocates and allies a voice in urging impactful change. In effective advocacy, strength undoubtedly rises from numbers. We stand with state and local coalition partners, community members, direct service providers, and elected champions, collectively working to inform decisions made in our state capital and City Hall. Our work is holistic in its approach to child well-being, focused on actions that will lift incomes, stabilize housing and address food insecurity, ensure children and families are connected to early intervention and behavioral health care, expand early education and youth services, and deepen a wide range of preventive services. For the next few months we will be channeling our priorities into actionable items for our supporters and audience, starting with an immediate focus on the state budget. One of the highlights for me was listening to Kevin Humphrys, CEO at Oakland Care Group, whose insights into the future of adult social care were not only enlightening but also deeply inspiring. Kevin began his talk with a quote that resonated with everyone in the room: "Adult social care is both an art and a science, bound by the complexity of human emotions." This perfectly encapsulates the dual challenges we face in this field—balancing the emotional and practical needs of those we care for. 🎭🔬 Kevin emphasised the urgent need for fair funding reform in adult social care. It’s clear that without adequate resources, the quality of care and the well-being of both carers and those they care for will significantly suffer. He also highlighted the importance of cultural shifts within our organisations. As we evolve, embracing changes in our approach can lead to meaningful progress and enhance the care we provide. 💡🔄 Moreover, Kevin discussed how crucial the widespread adoption of technology is in transforming adult social care. With the right support, these families can thrive. Who are Grandfamilies? Grandfamilies are households where children are raised by grandparents, older siblings, aunts, uncles, or other relatives. Grandfamily caregivers provide stability and continuity for children and youth facing the trauma of parental separation. However, these caregivers often need additional support to meet the physical, emotional, and financial demands of their new roles. Why Support Matters: When grandfamilies receive comprehensive support, they thrive. Emotional and practical assistance helps caregivers provide a nurturing environment, promoting the overall well-being and resilience of the children. The Role of Health and Human Service Professionals: Health and human service professionals are crucial in offering the expertise and resources needed to support grandfamilies effectively. By partnering with faith communities—without showing preference to any particular faith—they can ensure that grandfamilies from all backgrounds receive the help they need. Steps to Forming Effective Partnerships: 1. Identify Common Goals: Both health professionals and faith communities aim to support and uplift families. Establish common objectives to create a unified approach. 2. Create Inclusive Programs: Design programs that respect and welcome families from all faith backgrounds, ensuring no one feels excluded or marginalized. 3.
