When I moved to Kalavan village five years ago, I would never have imagined that things would turn out the way the did here. I had very specific expectations put in me by the people here who were promoting Kalavan as a place of entrepreneurial development, where everyone's going to be a business owner and the locals were focused on increasing tourism and opportunities for everyone, where I would have a valuable role to play in a community that shared my values. None of that turned out to be true, but I've done a lot to make the best of that situation that I found myself in. And with everything we've accomplished now, socially, I can definitely see where this can go now if we continue to bring more and more of the right kind of people with the right mindsets here. When I was looking at different rural parts of Armenia to buy a house in, Kalavan was the only rural area I saw in Armenia that was kind promising a long-term vision of development, both culturally and economically. I was trying to find a place where I could raise kids, build a life for myself, and even spend the rest of my life potentially. I think now that Kalavan has crossed some kind of threshold that started with the brand-building efforts that the people, the politicians and leaders who initially convinced me to come here when they start promoting this village as some kind of transformational economic environment. I think if we continue to bring more people with diverse backgrounds and experiences who share the same basic humanitarian values, I think eventually Kalavan might be known for. I don't think there's anything like that in Armenia—places where outsiders and free thinkers and free spirits are welcome and encouraged and supported to some degree. There's a lot of demand here that is not being adequately serviced. That's why we're expanding our living accommodations with a new little studio. behind the house and we'll probably build earthbag houses detached from the house after that. That's the best feature I can envision here and that's the most valuable thing I can think to do with all the progress we've made on my property.
