The two greatest attractions of being a mostly public company M&A lawyer are participating in the deal making process and witnessing the dynamic between the Chair, CEO and full Boards. The second is endlessly fascinating and differentiated. The background and personality of the Chair determine a lot but not as much as the ego ( or not) of the CEO. After all, the CEO is a constant presence. The relationships of the Board members is very important. Do they have origins in the same other companies? Were they service providers? Did they go to school together? Some lawyers don’t spend much time on these factors and relationships. I find that they explain a lot. Think about the companies you advise.

Another great lesson from Adam Witkov. Mentoring junior lawyers is at a crossroads. And now we also have to balance the (sometimes unrealistic) expectations people have regarding AI tools and our work. AI can augment human knowledge work, but it can’t replace human creativity and judgement. We need to ensure that we provide meaningful work (and yes, sometimes even the grunt work that could otherwise be automated) to newer associates so they can develop that wisdom and judgement needed to produce solid legal work product - and to supervise the use of AI and other tools.

Achieving success is not a happenstance occurrence, rather it necessitates consistent and purposeful effort to witness tangible results. As we embark on the new year, legal practitioners must proactively seek ways to elevate their practice and remain at the forefront of the field. Beharry, Partner (International Arbitration) at Foley Hoag LLP, is nothing short of a masterclass in traversing your professional journey in a law firm. Here's what Christina had to say to her younger self: "If I could impart some wisdom to my younger self, it would center around recognizing that your career in a law firm has essentially three distinct phases. Initially, it's all about honing your craft: learning to research thoroughly, write and advocate effectively, and becoming a subject matter expert in some areas of practice. This foundational stage is critical as you build your reputation both within your workplace and the external world.   As you progress, your role evolves into one of mentoring and managing others. This phase shifts your focus from individual contribution to fostering team dynamics and guiding younger colleagues. It’s no longer just about giving the best of you but also about getting the best of others. This involves adding a different set of skills beyond the technical ones to your repertoire.    Finally, at some point you’ll become more involved in business and management aspects of the firm. Here, the skills you’ll need to succeed shift yet again, as now it’s about building a client base as well as contributing to the overall strategic growth of the firm. A law firm is a business after all, and for it to survive and thrive it cannot escape the basic arithmetic of profit and loss.    Each phase prepares you for the next one but is also distinct on its own, requiring continuous learning and growth. So, younger self, hold on because you’re about to embark on a lifelong journey that will never have a dull moment!"
