We’d like to extend a huge “thank you” to an amazing group of volunteers who have come out a few times already this summer to DCAC for a volunteer day! Dedicated volunteers representing SM Energy Company have done a deep clean of waiting areas, family rooms and therapy rooms, and helped organize toys. They also did some spring cleaning of our campus outdoor space and play areas, touched up paint, and planted flowers.

You have a choice: to do or not to do! There is trash in and around a school's outdoor play area and school grounds in a city in which you live. You know how demotivating and unhealthy it is for the students, teachers, and staff that works there. So will you do something about it? You may think if you don't have anything to do with that school, you can just ignore it. After all there are so many problems in the world that you cannot do anything about and you have enough things to worry about. Or you can say, here is my opportunity to do something that makes a difference. There are many options for what you can do. You can speak up about it, raise awareness, try to address the underlying problems, organize an event to pickup trash or join one such event that has already been organized! On the occasion of the Earth Day, consider picking up some trash and showing your love for mother earth at the same time as helping make this school an inviting place for learning and growing. #EarthDay #Clean #Schools

School's out for summer - but what does this mean for school aged children who can't drive? ☀ In our latest article, we looked at the ways your local bus benefits you and your community. 🚌 One way your local bus benefits your community is that it provides freedom and independence to those who cannot drive. This means that anyone who doesn't drive, whether that be children, adults, elderly people, or disabled people can still meet up with friends and family, or participate in activities in and around their community. ⛱ What other benefits do you believe the local bus provides to the community? ⬇ Read our latest article here: https://lnkd.in/deArTzgB

🧩 Older voices, younger voices, working class voices: we support them to make the most engaging and relatable media content out there 🎤 📰 🗣️
Ten points if you know what these pens *actually* are.... These are vapes. They encourage schoolchildren to evade being caught by parents and teachers. We desperately need to get to grips with the risks of vaping and how so many young people in our region are taking it up, unaware of the dangers. Why is this relevant to our work at Yellow Jigsaw CIC? Well, we believe in the power of peer to peer communications. It is much more effective for 15-year-old Kenny to hear about the realities of vaping from his mate Chris than hearing it from a parent, a teacher or a local public health professional. That's why we'll be working with our young reporters at Media Cubs to explore how they can learn the facts and communicate them to their mates. We will be running free-to-attend Summer clubs and workshops across Manchester for young people to learn new media skills and to put them into action on important topics like this. Grown ups: drop me a line if you have any young people or professionals who want to get involved 💪

Good afternoon community members, I hope 2024 is off to a good start. As we move into a new year I wanted to speak briefly to a matter that has come to my attention as a school committee member; that of our name & mascot in Barnstable Public Schools. The objective of a school name and mascot is to signify something the community values, feels represented by, and brings a sense of unity. A school district’s name and mascot must also be respectful, culturally-proficient, and inspiring. As I spend time in the district & attend various events, I see many community members wearing attire & speaking earnestly about our former school name and mascot; “Red Raiders”. At the same time, I see current students & recent graduates wearing attire & attempting to embrace our current name & mascot; “Red Hawks”. Seeing these optics coupled with feedback I’ve received from community members; a sense of unity appears to be lacking. Moving into a new year therefore, I believe it’s important to examine our name & mascot in Barnstable Public Schools, to understand if it’s something the community values, feels represented by, and brings a sense of unity. It’s also important to clarify, in my view, what the term “Raider” stands for. A Raider is “someone who advances on an enemy position, or into enemy territory”; “a person who takes spoils or plunder (as in battle).” The term Raider is not particular to any cultural heritage, nor does it exclude those from particular backgrounds. Given our rich maritime history here in Barnstable, as well as centuries of service in the United States Armed Services; a “Raider” can represent a “mariner” or “servicemen”; roles available to & inclusive of all community members. In conclusion, our name & mascot in Barnstable Public Schools is a matter of importance in 2024, amongst others; and feedback from the community is invaluable as we proceed forward in the new year.
