Yesterday was International Mother Language Day and AIIC UK & Ireland reminded us of the varieties of English. English, not Globish (the global form of English spoken around the world)! According to the linguist Braj Kachru, English is used different concentric circles, with the inner circle being the traditional base, comprising countries such as the United Kingdom and Ireland and the anglophone populations of the former British colonies. But with all these varieties, have you ever been to a meeting, and felt that the English you learnt at school or even at university wasn’t enough?
