What a great article by Lindsay Advocate on birding in the Kawarthas. Thanks to my birding friends Teresa Middleton and Susan Mooney who contributed with their great birding wisdom. If you would like to learn more about birding, I recommend joining the following Facebook Groups - Out and About in the Kawarthas and Ontario Bird and Wildlife ID's and Sightings. Today we are wrapping up our deep dive into the complicated process of Matchmaking here at Wild Spirit! "What kind of pack behaviors do you still see even though the wolves are not living all in the same enclosure?" Communication is the biggest one that comes to mind. Despite living separately and consisting of multiple different species, all of the rescues communicate with one another constantly. Every morning without fail, for example, they greet staff with barks, howls, and yips, and use similar vocalizations to let one another know when we're beginning our feeding routines, walks, or enrichment activities. In addition, the rescues often call out to one another in the event of an animal's passing--a demonstration that cannot possibly be described with words, but goes to show that regardless of blood, the animals that call the sanctuary home truly are a "family". We also see a number of cooperative behaviors often used in wolf packs, even among pairs. Arctic wolf, Teton, and his late sister, Shasta, for example, were well-known for working together to ambush unsuspecting wildlife that ventured inside their enclosure. On more than one occasion these two managed to catch ravens, squirrels, and other animals using their unique ambush strategies.

THE GREAT ELEPHANT RESCUE Around the world, there are heroes working every day to preserve nature and our wildlife. Their dedication is often unseen, yet it is vital for the survival of our planet’s most magnificent creatures. The rescue depicted in this video is a tribute to their work. It reminds us of the power of compassion and the lengths we can go to protect life beyond our own. Pay particular attention to the kindness and empathy these rescuers show in understanding the bond between a mother elephant and her baby. In their every action, you see a recognition of the deep connection these animals share—a bond not so different from our own. It’s a wonderful story with a very happy ending, showing that even the smallest acts of care can make a world of difference. “If a man does not know to which port he sails, no wind is favorable.” – Marcus Aurelius. These rescuers know their mission, and the world is better for it. #WildlifeConservation #ElephantRescue #CompassionInAction #AnimalWelfare If you enjoy my posts please like, comment, and follow me and the friends I tag on LinkedIn. With the worsening #climatecrisis, we should prepare ourselves for heroic wildlife response solutions, which will inevitably be required due to lakebeds and other natural water sources drying up… #wildliferescue #climatechange #animalrescue

Very proud to be a member of the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary Advisory Council representing the tourism sector along with Captain Marina Maze of Monterey Bay Ecotours. Did you know? ✅ The Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary (MBNMS) is one of the largest marine sanctuaries in the United States, offering a unique and diverse array of marine life and habitats. ✅ The sanctuary attracts millions of visitors each year, generating substantial revenue for local businesses, including hotels, restaurants, and shops. ✅ Tourism and recreation activities within MBNMS support thousands of jobs in the region. This includes employment in hospitality, retail, recreational services, and tour operations. ✅ Popular activities include whale watching, diving, kayaking, and fishing. These activities draw visitors from around the world, further boosting the local economy. ✅ Many businesses rely on the sanctuary's natural resources, such as dive shops, kayak rental services, and fishing charters. These businesses benefit directly from the sanctuary’s appeal and contribute to the local economy. ✅ Various events and festivals related to marine conservation and recreation, such as the Monterey Bay Aquarium events and the annual Whalefest, bring in additional visitors and revenue. ✅ According to NOAA: National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration the overall economic contribution from the sanctuary to the local economy can be substantial, often amounting to hundreds of millions of dollars annually when considering direct and indirect impacts. ✅ Institutions like the Monterey Bay Aquarium provide educational programs and experiences that attract tourists, further enhancing the economic impact. Recreation and tourism activities associated with the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary play a crucial role in supporting the regional economy, providing employment, and generating significant revenue for local communities. Thank you for listening to my Ted Talk.
When you’re an otter like me, the days can sometimes blur together. Finding urchins to eat, rolling around in Monterey Bay, practicing my belly-flopping and somersaulting…it can start to get a little old. But today’s the best day of the year for otters and for our human friends who support us. It’s World Otter Day, and it would mean so much to me if you would take our Wildlife Pledge to protect sea otters like me and my neighbors at https://lnkd.in/g8S9eY_h! Since today is all about me, I’d love to tell you about all the ways that the National Marine Sanctuary Foundation is working to keep the ocean healthy and safe for otters like myself. The Foundation is working tirelessly to make sure we safeguard our nation’s marine sanctuaries—like my beautiful home of Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary. Conserving these special places not only protects marine animals and plants, but also boosts economic livelihoods and human well-being. That’s a win-win situation if I’ve ever heard of one. Can you believe that Southern sea otters like me were once ruthlessly hunted for our fur? We’re also particularly susceptible to oil spills, making it extra important that our habitats are preserved as sanctuaries. That’s why, while I love meeting my adoring fans, if you’re in Monterey Bay please make sure that you don’t crowd us, try to touch us, or give us your snacks! In honor of World Otter Day, will you take the Wildlife Pledge to help protect otters like me? The National Marine Sanctuary Foundation is helping to protect homes like mine by training volunteers to educate people about how to protect me and my fellow otters. I can’t thank you enough for supporting the Foundation’s work to protect critters like me and my friends. That’s it for now—my bellyflopping won’t perfect itself! Sincerely, Luna the Otter #worldseaotterday

Join us at Bioneers TOMORROW Saturday March 30th for our session on safeguarding wildlife and wild places, and learn how you can be more involved in this critically important work! We share our planet with many other animals, including some especially beautiful and captivating wildlife species, and tragically, our own species is taking up more and more space and consuming an ever-increasing share of the biosphere’s resources, so many wild animals are facing unprecedented challenges. Hear from Paul Thompson, Neal Sharma, Zoliswa Nhleko, and Rae Wynn-Grant about the difficult and fascinating job of protecting these incredible creatures at Coexistence with Wild Animals. https://hubs.ly/Q02rbzmD0
