M. David Johnson’s Post

CEO @ Modern Family Law | JD

When I started Modern Family law in 2017, we had 4 associates and 2 paralegals.  It was one month after I bought out my former partner and the firm was struggling to keep its head above water.  My vision was to expand, grow and provide innovative, client-focused services for today’s families.  It was a tortious slog for many years. As we look to open our 10th office in Seattle, Washington, in August, Modern Family Law will have almost 50 lawyers and 110-120 employees, across four states by September.  Our gross revenues will exceed $25M next year, potentially by a lot.  We continue to drive down the cost of legal services while expanding the client base to over 900 open and active cases by year end.  Innovation is king in our firm. But I’ve learned growth without drama is impossible.  Many factors come into play as a team rapidly expands.  Ego, greed, and outside interference are constant foes to long term success.  While I wish there was more congeniality in the practice area, protectionism and an unhealthy monopoly still hold the power in our profession, particularly in family law.  It is a cutthroat field. For newer lawyers thinking of spinning off their own practice, or thinking of joining a “traditional” firm, I can only say, don’t.  I know this is contrary to the LinkedIn mantra of “dream big” but it’s the truth.  It’s a brutal, unforgiving world out there and you’ll find no quarter given for creativity and innovation.  It’s rare indeed to find true, honest collaboration. Our success is an outlier.  I could give you the secret recipe, but it will probably do you no good.  It’s the people.  Every day I’m thankful for the amazing team we have because I know, without them, I’d be slugging away in a windowless office in traditional firm, hoping one day to sit first chair.  I’m a lucky guy.

It is a very tough area of law to build and expand. It takes the right fit and personality. I would love to connect to discuss how your growth occurred. :)

Dave, congratulations on the continued expansion. I look back fondly at my time with MFL and have loved watching the firm grow. To your point above, thank you for helping me dream big. All of us need to remember that it's not what we do, but how we do it and why we do it that really matters.
