👾 Do TikTok's New AI Avatars Help or Hurt Creators? TikTok has just launched Symphony Digital Avatars, AI-generated Avatars of real people that can be used in TikTok videos. These come in a selection of either Stock Avatars or Custom Avatars that represent the likeness of a given creator. One benefit from this is that it allows creators to scale their content more automatically, theoretically cutting down on their cost and time spent creating content. This extends to language translation - the ability for a creator to automatically dub their voice for several markets. Small businesses would also benefit from using these AI Avatars as a low-cost way to scale their creative assets in advertising. This also allows them to save on costs of paying creators in different countries or speaking different languages. There are definitely benefits, but I wonder whether this new feature heavily favors brands while simultaneously hurting creators. While this technology is truly inevitable, I can imagine there are several creators who feel general unease with this Black Mirror-esque product feature. It's also possible that the Name, Image, and Likeness of creators could be replicated without their permission. But the biggest consequence of this new feature could be that brands no longer need to pay creators. Brands can just use Stock Avatars in a way that bypasses the need for creators. Of course, the most influential and authentic creators will still be in high demand, but there's a mid-to-long tail of creators who will likely see their commercial opportunities dry up because businesses can now just use Stock Avatars as their ad creative. If these digital avatars essentially "productize" creators and invalidate a large portion of the creator economy, I expect this could result in massive backlash. 👨🎤 Will this be the end of Influencers? 👩🎤 TikTok just launched Symphony Avatars where brands are able to create an AI-generated avatar to speak about a brand or a product. 💯 TikTok's recent study found that 58% of TikTok users said they are more likely to trust brands after learning about them from TikTok creators, these newly added features, give brands more control over what they want to portray and save budget on engaging an influencer or talent. The addition of this feature for TikTok will push content creators to be more creative and put more effort into their posts. If an AI could do the same thing a content creator posts, why would a brand waste money on it? ✨ Influencers & content creators would now need to compete against AI creators and push themselves in terms of their creativity and content. With this additional feature, I do hope that it is used in the right way and not be used to scam or trick audiences into believing in a certain product or service. 👮♂️ TikTok would need to balance the credibility of the platform by introducing these features. Otherwise, it would be tough for users to believe the content on the platform, driving users away. Tiktok is launching AI-generated avatars of real influencers (custom avatars) and actors (stock avatars)! Program named Symphony will allow for these avatars to be used for ads & promotion. Benefits? For businesses, it provides the opportunity to use globally renowned personalities to promote their products in 30+ languages, enhancing their international presence and appeal. And for influencers, it is opening up new avenues for influencers to monetize and expand their global reach. Downsides? Much like promotional videos must be labeled as such, AI-generated videos will need to be labeled as well. The problem in both cases is that this label may not carry over if the video is reshared on other platforms. As the distinction between real and virtual content fades, the importance of ethical practices and transparency escalates. Brands must carefully balance these factors to build trust and establish genuine connections with their audience.
