Thursday 2nd May 2024. Democracy in action across Greater London. A Mayor will be elected under first past post as well as Members of the London Assembly. Whatever the result there will be changes of personnel. If Sadiq wins a third term, expect changes within his deputy mayoral team. If Susan Hall wins, who will she turn to for advice? The early days of Mayor Boris were nothing if not chaotic!🥴 Policy and style will change too. Sadiq in his third term can afford to be bolder and more radical. It is unlikely he will stand again. Susan Hall will need to quickly decide what her policy agenda is and how she wants to define herself. There is also the small matter of the Mayor dealing with a new government post the general election ... As of today, old hands are making no public predictions about the London mayoral contest. Humble pie is rather bitter …😩 The real work for clients will start on Tuesday 7th May. Good Chaps or Bad Chaps? An interesting piece in the FT Weekend Magazine by Simon Kuper, who has just published "Good Chaps: How Corrupt Politicians Broke Our Law and Institutions". https://lnkd.in/eKseJDVY The 'good chaps' were "public service toffs.. [who] after private school Oxbridge and war ... became senior civil servants, army generals and BBC bosses. Most took their perch at the top of the class system for granted." According to Kuper, they began dying out, and as "Thatcherite wealth-worship" took over and London got richer "there were more plutocrats ... able to tempt politicians." He says that, whoever takes over will need to "cage Britain's governing elite in an unprecedented rules-base system." As Tacitus said "The more corrupt the state, the more numerous its laws." It will be interesting to see what happens in the future to the 'bad chaps' and whether the stream of scandals will increase. He ends by saying that "gradually the UK should start breeding more Good Chaps again." We need more than a gradual change, but can anyone get the better of those at the top of the class system? I certainly hope so!

This could mean more bipartisan deals that get things done will happen - obviously. That leads to more regular order. The House is now in a weaker negotiating position, given the motion. The BATNA for all parties has changed, and the clock now works against a more conservative position. There is the FRA to which all previously agreed; the re-emerged position. Add time lost, and there we are. In the long run, workable solutions are in the offing. The institution can work through it. SA President Cyril Ramaphosa has just announced his new cabinet that comprises representatives from political parties that have joined the government of national unity. It’s a new era for SA since attaining democracy 30 years ago, and definitely uncharted territory given the divergent political views and ideologies of the parties in the government. A key takeout is that the new cabinet is balanced enough with pragmatic choices made for key and strategic economic cluster ministries. Retaining the finance minister will reassure markets and investors of policy continuity, and giving a number of ministerial positions to the Democratic Alliance ensures some modicum of accountability and transparency in government. Simply put, the days of ANC political and leadership hegemony are over .. for now. Whether it is good for the country is another chapter to be experienced especially over the five years of the duration of the seventh administration.
