🔦 In the #IIASASpotlight: Meet IIASA researcher and food security expert Felicity Addo, who is breaking down the ivory tower of science. By empowering communities and working together, she's driving real-world, sustainable change from the ground up. ⭐ Earlier this week and as part of her work on the LAMASUS project, she received the ÖGA (Austrian Association of Agricultural Economics) Award for the Best Dissertation for her thesis on "Assessing Productivity and Efficiency, and its Determinants: The Case of Crop Farms in Austria". Here is some more detail: postponing the adoption of technology is costly. The technology of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) has been technically available decades ago; however, it´s adoption has been limited due to political reasons resulting in lengthy regulatory process, which slows down the R&D transfer and affects agricultural productivity and food security. Our study projected the impact of R&D transfer speed up and relaxation of regulatory framework on agricultural productivity and food security towards 2050. It also allows to assess important geopolitical consequences of regulatory framework adjustment. Speeding up R&D transfer could bring over 200 billion US$ globally expressed as NPV of GDP benefits.

These multi-actor collaborations—comprising farms, industrial firms, consultants, and research institutes—are supported by the European Innovation Partnership for Agricultural Productivity and Sustainability (#EIPAGRI) to drive innovation in agriculture. Our study focuses on 173 OGs across Southern Italy, examining their innovation goals, activities, and outcomes using data from Innovarurale website. By applying definitions from the #OsloManual and categories from the #CommunityInnovationSurvey (CIS), we classified these innovations and their expected effects. Main findings on OGs Regional strengths: #Campania: High diversification, emphasizing green innovation. #Apulia: Focus on service innovation. #Sicily: Excellence in product quality and flexibility. #Challenges: A limited focus on training across all regions, raising concerns about the long-term competitiveness of the agricultural sector. 🇨🇴 ☀️ ⚡ 🔌 Socio-economic feasibility evaluation of Agriphotovoltaic systems in Colombia 🇨🇴 ☀️ ⚡ 🔌 In his JST project, Nicolás Valbuena Rincón (Universität Hohenheim / Alliance of Bioversity International and CIAT) is evaluating the socio-economic feasibility of Agriphotovoltaic (APV) systems in Colombia. The objective is to shed a light on the limiting and enabling socioeconomic factors for APV systems to be successfully integrated in Colombian agriculture. “The project is important to me for personal and professional reasons.”, says Nicolás. “The former is because I hope its results will provide long-term practical solutions to many people in my home country. Today marked a significant milestone in my academic journey as I successfully defended my thesis on "Differences in Preferences Among Traditional vs Non-Traditional Lentil Consumers in Canada." 🌱🇨🇦 This research delves into the intricate variations in consumer preferences within the lentil market, shedding light on how traditional and non-traditional consumer segments perceive and choose lentils differently. Through rigorous analysis and insightful findings, I explored the factors influencing these preferences and their implications for the Canadian agricultural sector. I am immensely grateful to my thesis committee for their invaluable guidance and support throughout this journey. This achievement would not have been possible without the encouragement and mentorship of Dr Jill Hobbs, Dr Peter Slade Dr Simona Lubieniechi and examining Dr Yang Yang whose expertise has been instrumental in shaping my research.
