The Value of Oversight Everyday DOI demonstrates the importance of anti-corruption work and why it makes a difference. Today, DOI issued its Calendar Year (“CY”) 2023 statistics, which show increases from CY 2022 in several categories, including the number of arrests, complaints, active caseload at the agency, and recommendations issued to various City agencies as a result of DOI investigations. DOI is watching over NYC and has been doing the job since 1873! Read more about our 2023 yearend stats here: https://on.nyc.gov/3V8gqJY “DOI’s investigative work uncovered theft, fraud and other corrupt acts against the City in 2023, holding accountable offenders who exploit public programs and dollars, recouping valuable taxpayer funds for the City, and providing improvements to government operations through DOI’s recommendations for policy and procedural reform. The fight against corruption and fraud requires collaboration City-wide, and DOI’s work relies, in part, on reports of misconduct made by concerned City employees and members of the public. I want to thank the DOI staff for their commitment to finding facts and exposing wrongdoing and for their diligence in conducting the significant investigations discussed in this annual report.” - DOI Commissioner Jocelyn E. ‘The Only Thing Necessary for the Triumph of Evil is that Good Men Do Nothing’ The Founder and CEO at My Local Bobby Ltd and the UK’s leading Private Prosecutor and Investigations Company TM Eye Ltd.
The significance of this cannot be over estimated. The Met have deliberately destroyed vital evidence and intelligence that would undoubtedly have solved a series of Murders and other serious crimes in order to cover up entrenched police corruption. Those responsible for taking that decision should be held to account in a criminal court. In 2014, following a letter sent to The Home Affairs Select Committee, the then Commissioner Hogan Howe admitted to that Committee, that there were 'lorry loads' of material. At the following Home Affairs Select Committee meeting, AC Craig Mackie admitted that they had 'miraculously found' at least 3,003 crates of secret corruption material that supported Operation OTHONA and the leaked 2002 DPS report Operation TIBERIUS (Leaked by one of the Met's senior officers in charge of their Anti-Corruption Command). That material has never been disclosed and appears now to have also been destroyed. https://lnkd.in/eY_WWfJN These documents included 'bugged' conversations between corrupt cops and organised crime, surveillance material, and detailed intelligence and evidence of very senior officers and the highest echelons of UK organised crime. that material should have been disclosed in a series of unsolved Murder cases and in criminal trails. What exactly is The Met trying to hide by destroying this material. This is the most appalling criminal act by a Police Service in years.
OPERATION ROSEN-BRIDGE THE EXECUTIONS OF GOODERHAM & ARNOLD IN EPPING FOREST 1989. All investigative avenues have led Fedora to the early covert activity that eventually led to the setting up of the Met's Ghost Squad. Senior officers at the time, deliberately ensured this double murder was never properly investigated, due to their aspirations to be promoted. There was mileage in corruption and being on the side of the angels. However, they didn't act Saint like. Fedora is finding that murder after murder during the 1990s and early 2000s, were left unresolved in order that the covert assets, deployed by the Ghost Squad's Operation Othona, could continue harvesting intelligence. However, what was the result of Operation Othona? The answer is very little, if anything. Most of those arrested and convicted were later acquitted on appeal. So, what about all the murders not properly investigated and the victims that piled up around London and the home counties? What about all of the Intelligence Othona harvested? Well, it was all mysteriously shredded in 2003, just after the Operation Tiberius Report was written. https://lnkd.in/eNJr_iwg Just what was in the mass of material shredded? Well, Fedora has spoken to some of the Ghost Squad? It is now quite obvious that by not moving in as they should have done on countless murders, the two biggest crime families/syndicates the UK has ever seen, were allowed to flourish and establish themselves during the 1990s and early 2000s. Countless people died a gruesome death due to the egos of a few. The fear of this scandal surfacing properly, grips the Met even today. https://lnkd.in/etBsMPrf

What's in store for whistleblowers in 2024? In a new article, KKC's Stephen M. Kohn outlines what Congress and federal agencies need to do to strengthen whistleblower programs and advance the United States' anti-corruption agenda. “The only thing holding back effective whistleblower laws in the United States is the lobbying power of special interests and powerful government officials’ hostility toward dissent,” Kohn writes. “This must end. Whistleblowing has proven to be the most effective means to detect waste, fraud, abuse and threats to the public health and safety. The United States Strategy on Countering Corruption represents a roadmap for action. It’s time for the President, Congress and those running agencies such as the Department of Treasury and the SEC to get the job done.”

In the UK, the fight against serious financial crimes like fraud, bribery, and corruption is spearheaded by the Serious Fraud Office (SFO). The SFO stands out for its dual capability: it not only investigates but also prosecutes some of the most complex and high-profile financial offences. This unique position allows the SFO to tackle intricate cases that span borders, industries, and multiple financial disciplines. One of the key aspects of the SFO's role is its proactive stance in preventing financial crimes. This not only involves punitive measures post-crime but also includes preventive actions, such as issuing guidelines and working collaboratively with businesses to promote transparency and ethical practices. The SFO’s investigations can have significant implications for individuals and businesses alike. Those under investigation can face not just legal consequences but also reputational and financial repercussions. This underscores the importance of understanding the SFO’s methods and the legal landscape in which it operates. What are your thoughts on the effectiveness of investigative bodies like the SFO in maintaining financial integrity? #sfo #financialcrime #ukbusinesses

Nevada Private Investigator (PILB lic#4253), Certified Fraud Examiner, Owner and Qualifying Agent at Brian Erbis Consulting, LLC. NYPD detective (retired). President of the ACFE Northern Nevada Chapter #252.
In the wake of the largest single-day federal bribery takedown in the history of the Department of Justice, the New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) is under scrutiny. A network of current and former NYCHA employees allegedly accepted bribes from contractors, compromising the procurement process and undermining NYCHA's mission to provide safe and affordable housing. This case is a stark reminder of the toxic organizational culture that can breed within public institutions, where nepotism, cronyism, and bureaupathology can thrive unchecked. The charges highlight the urgent need for a robust framework of internal controls to eliminate fraud, waste, and abuse. As a retired NYPD detective turned Certified Fraud Examiner and private investigator, I've seen firsthand the damage that such corruption can cause. It erodes trust, hampers efficiency, and ultimately harms those who rely on these institutions the most. The challenge now for NYCHA and city officials is to institutionalize a culture of transparency, accountability, and integrity. The 'trust but verify' principle must be at the heart of this transformation. It's not enough to lead by example; the tone at the top must be echoed throughout the organization. This case is a wake-up call for public institutions everywhere. The fight against corruption is ongoing, but with the right measures in place, we can ensure that our public institutions serve the public interest, not personal agendas. https://lnkd.in/g9d3XXhV #FraudExamination #InternalControls #EthicalConduct #toneatthetop
