I learnt a very hard lesson, very early on in my teaching career – ‘Doing a few things well is far better than doing a lot of things badly.’ I understand the pull, as a new teacher you want to be seen to be doing extra-curricular activities; extra band practice, joining committees, debating and Clean Up Australia incentives. This is partly because you are excited to be in the profession and want to gain as much experience as possible in a variety of roles, it may also be to impress your supervisor with your ability to handle multiple responsibilities, or it may just be to add depth and to your resume. All of these things are good and part of the profession, but you do have to learn to exercise a little bit of caution. https://lnkd.in/gn4QxekP

Dear fellow graduates, I want to emphasize that while your qualifications and certifications are important, they shouldn't be the sole definition of who you are. We all possess natural skills, talents, and strengths that are unique to us. It's essential to recognize and cultivate these abilities for our own benefit. Don't limit yourself to what's on paper. Education in South Africa has often confined us to a narrow view of success, making us believe that formal education is the only path to achievement. But in reality, we are all amazing and brilliant individuals with so much more to offer. While formal education is valuable, it shouldn't be the only measure of our intelligence. Instead, let's view it as a complement to our natural skills, talents, and strengths.

Earlier today in the House of Assembly, I delivered the National Training Board’s Annual Report for the fiscal years 2019/2020 to 2022/2023 highlighting the important work carried out by the National Training Board and the Department of Workforce Development over the past 4 years. Over the four years reported, the team at the Department of Workforce Development have worked passionately to create educational training opportunities that allowed thousands of Bermudians to capacity build and gain the technical and readiness skills needed for employment in Bermuda. Some of the milestones captured in the report are: - Bermuda’s Youth Employment Strategy which was developed in 2021 to address youth unemployment by facilitating greater opportunities and educational pathways for all young Bermudians between 18 – 26 years of age. - Graduate Trainee Programme which stands as a testament to the government’s commitment to nurturing emerging talent and fostering the next generation of leaders. - The Department made excellent progress in securing National Certification in the designated occupations for over two hundred persons. - The allocation of almost a million dollars ($1,000,000) in scholarship support, providing financial assistance to countless aspiring professionals seeking to enhance their skills and contribute meaningfully to the local workforce.
