Research Leader - Education and Training at Batchelor Institute of Indigenous Tertiary Education
Out this week in The Australian Educational Researcher, an article I've written with Rhonda Oliver, Robyn Ober and Catherine Holmes reports on research showing how people in remote communities perceive quality teachers and quality teaching. We found several qualities of teachers that support student engagement and retention: Recruiting and training local staff to be language teachers and cultural experts; building the EALD capability of non-local teachers; teachers who connect students with language and Country; teachers who build strong relationships with parents and students; and place-based curriculum adaptations. Not one person we spoke to mentioned truancy officers as a useful strategy to engage young people in education. Exciting news for education in Minnesota! 📢 For the first time, Minnesota teachers can now become licensed to teach heritage languages. Research has shown that learning a heritage language — a student’s home language or the language of their broader community, which kids born in the United States may not speak fluently — can improve academic performance and sense of belonging. This program is not only groundbreaking but also deeply impactful in creating inclusive opportunities for multilingual learners and their communities. Wouldn't you know it, this pathway through PELSB is also powered by Proserva! We’re incredibly proud to support this initiative and play a role in building pathways for teachers to earn licensure in these critical areas. "But until very recently, it was all but impossible for heritage language teachers to obtain a license in teaching their language and culture. Instead, those teachers often received temporary permissions to teach their subject matter. That gave them little job security or relevant professional development, and they often weren’t eligible for annual raises." This marks the second The Minnesota Star Tribune article in as many weeks highlighting innovative education programs supported by Proserva. It’s clear there’s growing momentum for creating more equitable and accessible pathways into the teaching profession. ICYMI Californians Together recently published a new report, The State of English Learners in California Public Schools! This report is the first of its kind in the field of education policy and takes a deep dive into a variety of data sources to answer questions about who our state’s 1.1 million English learners are, how they are being served in the education system, and what state and local leaders can do to better serve their needs. It highlights the significant work ahead of educators, advocates, and policy makers to ensure that California’s education system provides access for all current and former English learners and sets a vision for the outcomes that our system should produce by the end of this decade.
