Community mental health is a significant part of the mental health system. Unfortunately, years of underfunding have resulted in significant wage gaps. These organizations receive funding from the government, similar to hospitals and other areas of healthcare, to provide care, and they too are limited by government restrictions on spending funds, on wage increases, one-time funding, etc. The significant wage gap that exists between community mental health and roles in schools, hospitals, justice, and even private sector (including virtual care), has seen a departure from community mental health for higher paying roles, and a challenge to recruit and retain staff. All this at a time when the demand for mental health is greater than ever. All this at a time that integrated care where community care, acute care, and social support organizations work in partnership to create a healthcare system that works for the populations it serves is a focus of the Government. It is time for a plan that closes the gap, that recognizes the value of community health, and ensures that people are able to get the care they need close to home, in their communities, when they need it. #CloseTheGap #CommunityMentalHealth #Wages

What if legal services are integrated into healthcare settings? This recent study found that a medical-legal partnership results in policy advocacy, addressing issues from both the health and legal teams, with likely greater impact than if each group had acted alone. The researchers studied policy advocacy that emerged from the Health Justice Program, a collaboration between the St. Michael's Hospital Academic Family Health Team, Neighbourhood Legal Services, and other local community legal aid clinics. This study outlines how medical-legal partnerships can identify and address social determinants of health through policy advocacy. The deadline for bills to be introduced in the State Assembly and State Senate was last Friday. Over 2,000 new bills were introduced with hundreds impacting California businesses, scores impacting health care, and many impacting our industry specifically. CAHSAH's legislative team led by its Policy, Advocacy, and Public Affairs (PAPA) Committee and its various subcommittees will be reviewing and evaluating those bills impacting home care, hospice, and home health and will develop our association's position on those measures. Please watch WNU, CAHSAH's social media sites, and your email inboxes for information on how you can advocate for CAHSAH and our industry on these critical measures. #homecare #homehealth #hospice #advocacy

Community Health Worker Definition: "A community health worker is a frontline public health worker who is a trusted member of and/or has an unusually close understanding of the community served. This trusting relationship enables the worker to serve as a liaison/link/intermediary between health/social services and the community to facilitate access to services and improve the quality and cultural competence of service delivery.
