The 2023-2024 CHAIN statistics released today, show a staggering 19% increase in the number of people sleeping rough in London, compared to last year. Alexia Murphy, CEO, Depaul UK, said: “The number of people sleeping rough in the capital is the highest figure on record and something must be done. Homelessness services across London are stretched to the limit and more help is needed, the next Government must tackle this issue immediately in London, and across the whole country.”

How high will Rough Sleeping go? "Figures from the Combined Homelessness and Information Network (CHAIN) have recently shown that more than 2,000 (2,038) people were forced to sleep rough for the first time between January and March this year. This is a 37% increase on the same period last year, and the biggest year on year rise of people new to the streets since the pandemic." "Additionally, the UK Government has published data revealing that the number of households trapped in temporary accommodation in England has reached a new record high. 112,660 households were living in temporary accommodation such as nightly paid B&Bs between October and December 2023 - an increase of 12% on the same period last year, and an increase of 98% on 2013. This includes over 145,800 children." So how do councils, with limited budget, deal with the growing demand? The pressure this is putting on Council employees is damaging, as the future foreshadows a never-ending case load. What Now? Is there a solution with longevity? (https://lnkd.in/eDFtsTWz)

Really important report on the almost impossible challenge facing people trying to move out of homelessness using the Private Rented Sector. Without enough social housing, the PRS is the only housing option, but it is not viable without things changing for tenants and for landlords. Really good that our experience in Hastings could contribute to making this case for change.
📢 Our new report #NoAccessNoWayOut reveals the harsh realities faced by thousands experiencing homelessness, struggling to access the private rented sector and employment. The report is told through first-hand evidence of the people living and working at homeless services across the country in the context of an ever-worsening housing crisis, and a broken system that is entrapping them with no access and no way out. Report by independent researcher Becky Rice. More details ➡ https://bit.ly/3Mospxf

Today’s #homelessness statistics are deeply concerning. The figures are clear that homelessness in England is soaring, and they echo what we are hearing from frontline workers – the people tackling this issue head on – across the UK. Every person deserves a safe place to call home, but these statistics show us that instead, more and more people are being pushed into homelessness. This is putting pressure on an already strained sector, made up of frontline workers who are fighting day-in-day-out to achieve better futures for people.
