With the continuous news about the 737 learnings it can be easy to forget how big Boeing actually is. "The summary reports that amidst a surge in the government’s Foreign Military Sales program, Boeing products claimed over a third of total FMS sales in fiscal 2023. Specifically: A $12 billion sale of AH-64E Apache attack helicopters to Poland, which will make it the second biggest operator of that aircraft in the world after the U.S. Army. A $8.5 billion sale of CH-47F Chinook cargo helicopters to Germany, and a second $1.5 billion sale of Chinook to the Republic of Korea. A $5.9 billion sale of the Boeing 737-derived P-8A Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft to Canada, confirming Poseidon as the world’s leading airborne submarine hunter." https://lnkd.in/eTqnZzhb

Interesting article on recent attempts to reform the Foreign Military Sale process. While the FMS system seems to be flexible during crisis situations (Ukraine, Israel for example) I believe it still slows to a crawl for a vast majority of normal cases, and defense contractors share a big part of the blame. With the war in Ukraine still raging, and the Middle East about to fall apart, I'm surprised there is still no push for the President to use the Defense Production Act as a catalyst to speed up the assembly lines and better direct resources. The U.S. #AirForce anticipates a 60% increase in foreign #military sales in fiscal 2024, reaching over $46 billion. This surge is driven by heightened global instability, boosting demand for F-35 and F-16 aircraft. Significant deals include Turkey's $23 billion purchase of 40 F-16s and Greece's $8.6 billion acquisition of up to 40 F-35s. According to SIPRI data, revenues have dropped for the world’s 100 largest defence industry companies despite a sharp rise in demand. Revenues from sales of arms and military services by the 100 largest companies in the industry totalled USD 597 billion in 2022, 3.5 percent less than 2021 in real terms, even as demand rose sharply. The decrease was chiefly the result of falling arms revenues among major companies in the United States. Revenues increased substantially in Asia and Oceania and the Middle East. Outstanding orders and a surge in new contracts suggest that global arms revenues could rise significantly in the next few years. Although foreign military sales have surged, the process is still too slow for today’s global defense demands. As Sandy Long from the Defense Department highlights, lives are at stake if we don’t act now. My latest research, published by the Atlantic Council, investigates the outcomes over the past 30 years when the U.S. military has bought off-the-shelf gear proven in service with allied forces. While the instances are uncommon, the results are consistent: U.S forces get quality kit, at reasonable costs, mostly on time.
