𝐇𝐮𝐦𝐚𝐧 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐟𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐢𝐧 𝐍𝐮𝐫𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠 Healthcare staffing agencies, hospitals, and nursing homes have neen in violation of human trafficking laws in several states by exploiting foreign-based and US-based travel nurses. Human trafficking of travel nurses is one of many ethical failures of 𝙈𝙞𝙡𝙩𝙤𝙣 𝙁𝙧𝙞𝙚𝙙𝙢𝙖𝙣’𝙨 𝙡𝙞𝙗𝙚𝙧𝙩𝙖𝙧𝙞𝙖𝙣 𝙘𝙖𝙥𝙞𝙩𝙖𝙡𝙞𝙨𝙢. Milton Friedman’s brand of libertarian capitalism is failing the working class. The US needs to shift to more ethical 𝒑𝒓𝒐-𝒍𝒂𝒃𝒐𝒓 𝒆𝒄𝒐𝒏𝒐𝒎𝒊𝒄 𝒑𝒐𝒍𝒊𝒄𝒊𝒆𝒔 aligned with 𝙆𝙚𝙮𝙣𝙚𝙨𝙞𝙖𝙣 𝘾𝙖𝙥𝙞𝙩𝙖𝙡𝙞𝙨𝙢. 𝐁𝐀𝐂𝐊𝐆𝐑𝐎𝐔𝐍𝐃: Human trafficking in nursing is a severe issue affecting thousands of travel nurses from abroad & the US. 𝐅𝐚𝐢𝐥𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐌𝐢𝐥𝐭𝐨𝐧 𝐅𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐝𝐦𝐚𝐧 𝐋𝐢𝐛𝐞𝐫𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐧 𝐂𝐚𝐩𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐦 Milton Friedman’s libertarian capitalism fosters inhumane practices for all industries. It prioritizes ruthless profit extraction, dismantles safety policies and regulatory agencies, strips workers’ rights, creates a David-Goliath power imbalance, and fosters exploitative, dangerous, and deadly conditions. This system benefits a few, leaving the working class in decline, and fuels populist movements born of frustration. A version of this article originally appeared on UN News Some of Haiti’s gangs have bigger arsenals than the police as criminal groups are becoming “stronger, richer and more autonomous” by using arms trafficking to fuel their growth, according to UN experts. The consequences have plunged the Caribbean nation into an ongoing political and humanitarian crisis. Currently, there are “unprecedented levels of lawlessness”, UNODC’s regional representative Sylvie Bertrand told UN News. From Russian AK-47s and United States-made AR-15s to Israeli Galil assault rifles, a spike in trafficking increasingly sophisticated weaponry has gripped Haiti since 2021, said the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) in its latest report on the illegal arms trade in Haiti. Many of these illegal weapons are behind recent news reports of random sniper attacks, mass lootings, kidnappings and attacks on prisons to free thousands of inmates, which in turn has displaced more than 362,000 Haitians who are fleeing the violence. https://bit.ly/43RMFzd

Rising Violence in Cúcuta, #Colombia: Tackling Criminal Infiltration. The Colombian-Venezuelan border city of Cúcuta is grappling with escalating violence attributed to the growing influence of Venezuelan #criminalgroups. According to a recent report by the Citizen Council for Public #Safety and Criminal #Justice, Cúcuta ranks among the 50 most violent cities globally, with a concerning homicide rate of 33.8 per 100,000 inhabitants in 2023. #SergioPalacios, president of the National Merchants Federation in Norte de #Santander, highlighted alarming spikes in crime rates from 2022 to 2023, including a 92% increase in #kidnapping, 110% in #extortion, 115% in armed #robbery, and 62% in #murder within the department. In response, Mayor #JorgeAcevedo initiated the Liberty and Order security strategy, ordering the militarization of the city to combat the surge in violence. Acevedo's actions come after receiving threats from Venezuelan criminal groups, including #AK47 and #TrendeAragua. Tren de Aragua, the most influential #Venezuela's gang in Cúcuta, has expanded its reach into impoverished neighborhoods and even gained control over parts of Cúcuta prison. This expansion serves as a gateway for the group's transnational operations, extending its influence across Colombia and #SouthAmerica. The situation underscores the urgent need for coordinated efforts to address cross-border #criminalactivities and safeguard the security of border communities.

A delegation of the Council of Europe’s Group of Experts on Action against Trafficking in Human Beings (GRETA) carried out an evaluation visit to the Republic of Moldova on 22-26 April 2024, as part of the fourth evaluation round of the Convention on Action against Trafficking in Human Beings. This new evaluation round of monitoring the implementation of the Convention focuses on vulnerabilities to human trafficking and measures taken by States Parties to prevent them, detect and support vulnerable victims, and punish the offenders. As security has deteriorated in Nigeria, one of the country’s main challenges has become ‘banditry’, with an eight-fold increase in the number of armed robberies, kidnaps and murders between 2018 and 2022; Dr Oluwole Ojewale, Ph.D of the Institute for Security Studies in Senegal believes that a decentralised police force, working in partnership with community activists and the military where required, would be the most effective solution to the problem. ❝The primary authority to amplify state presence is the police. But poor policing in these areas has enabled banditry to continue. A different policing approach is needed.❞ ❝The federating units ought to take greater charge of security within their own jurisdiction. The federal government should also maintain a critical lever of management, and support the devolution of police power to the states.❞ ❝Countries where military and law enforcement agencies have been fused for peace operations include Bosnia-Herzegovina and Kosovo. The experiment has yielded useful results in operations against organised and serious war crimes.❞ ❝My core argument is that the Nigerian government must consider decentralising policing from the federal to state and community levels.
