Don't forget your roots. There's a lot of chatter on this platform about WFH, PTO, and the manners around sending a LinkedIn voice message. It's easy to get sucked in to the white collar LinkedIn bubble. But did you know that 80% of the world's workforce are hourly workers? These are essential, valuable, keep-the-world-turning jobs done by hard-working people. These are my roots. I acutely remember the difficulties of balancing (often multiple) jobs with study and friends and sleep. I missed a lot of birthday parties. Deputy is on a mission to improve the world of work, one shift at a time. Every day we pour resources and ideas and talent (there's stacks of it here!) into improving the lives of hourly workers. Last night I spoke on Network 10's The Project on the benefits employers are realising by considering flexibility at the heart of improved working conditions for workers. Well-known retail companies such as IKEA, BIG W, Bunnings and many others (including talenting.!) now offer 5 weeks annual leave. More flexibility can often lead to better commitment, engagement and wellbeing for workers, which obviously benefits employers as well. As with most things in the workplace, we can't look at employees solely as 'costs', we need to understand that supporting employees also supports our organisations. Pang Dong Lai, the founder and chairman of a Chinese retail company, has introduced "unhappy leave" days to promote work-life balance, allowing employees to take an additional 10 days off when they are not feeling happy. The company’s employment policy includes a seven-hour workday, weekends off, and 30 to 40 days of annual leave, plus five days off for Lunar New Year. Yu Donglai emphasized the importance of freedom and love in the workplace, stating that the company prioritizes employee well-being over growth. He also implemented a job-level certification system, allowing even janitors to earn up to 500,000 yuan (about $70,000) annually based on their professional skills. A 2021 survey revealed that over 65% of employees in China feel tired and unhappy at work.
