Succession planning is a corporate buzzword, but after watching the Olympics, I’m convinced the US team has a 9-box hidden in their playbook.
I guess it's just an occupational hazard that I'm still thinking about how a pommel horse specialist is a perfect analogy for the unsung heroes of team strategy.
We know the 9-box model is a vital tool for identifying and nurturing talent within our organizations. But how often do we stop to appreciate the nuances and lessons it can teach us about maximizing the potential of our teams?
Take Simone Biles, for example. With her incredible performance at the 2024 Summer Olympics, she won three gold medals and a silver. Simone's excellence in the all-around and her ability to consistently perform at the highest level is a testament to the exceptional talent in the "9" of the 9-box model. Yet, even the GOAT can have off days, as shown by her fall on beam.
On the other hand, we have Stephen Nedoroscik, a gymnast who took the spotlight with his expertise on the pommel horse, helping the US men's team secure a bronze medal and earning an individual bronze. Stephen embodies the "7" on the 9-box model. His deep, specialized knowledge proves that being in a "7" is not just acceptable but vital for team success.
As we reflect on these Olympic stories, let's remind ourselves that success in our organizations doesn't just come from those in the "9." We must recognize the value of deep expertise and specialized contributions, like Stephen's, as they are crucial to our teams' progress and success.
By celebrating diverse strengths and acknowledging that both breadth and depth are essential, we can create stronger, more resilient teams.
