Join Shirley Ryan AbilityLab and Prakash Jayabalan MD, PhD this week for our May 16 #webinar. Currently, individuals with knee osteoarthritis (OA) are treated by a ‘one-size fits all’ approach and many clinicians cannot tell which patients will benefit most from which treatment. An exciting, novel approach to treating OA is connecting information about a person’s biologic makeup to their clinical symptoms. https://lnkd.in/gBvM-U-7

Benzodiazepines are known to lead to dependency quickly and have numerous side effects. Long-term use is not recommended. However, if there is a long-term prescription, the goal should be to end therapy with these tranquilizers. However, discontinuation could have unexpected consequences, as US researchers reported in JAMA Network Open. In a registry study, patients who discontinued benzodiazepines after long-term therapy had an increased risk for death in the following 12 months. Whether there is a causal relationship between discontinuation of therapy and increased mortality rate or whether it is just the temporal coincidence of two phenomena cannot be answered by the study.

Myotonic Dystrophy Type 1 (DM1) is a rare, inherited, multisystemic disorder. It causes progressive muscle weakness and myotonia (delayed muscle relaxation). There are currently no approved treatments that target the root cause of DM1. But an experimental drug is showing promising signs. Delpacibart Etedesiran (del-desiran) is designed to target cells affected by DM1. The drug was reported to achieve consistent, durable improvements in myotonia, muscle strength, and mobility. Learn more about this investigational treatment in the Emerging Health Care Innovation Brief: https://hubs.la/Q02tSLpM0 #myotonicdystrophy #myotonicdystophytype1 #rarediseases #patientcare #healthcare #innovation #horizonscanning

In essence, a placebo is an ineffective medication or therapy that has no therapeutic benefit. They are frequently employed as a control group in clinical experiments, allowing comparisons with the medication or therapy under investigation. But why do they matter so much? Because of placebo, researchers can distinguish between the psychological benefits that stem from patients' expectations and the drug's true therapeutic efficacy by comparing a new drug's effects to those of a placebo. Surprisingly, though, people recover only because they think they are getting treatment. The placebo effect is a phenomenon that strengthens the link between the brain and body and how they function in tandem. It highlights how our expectations and beliefs can affect the way our health turns out. It's crucial to remember that while the placebo effect is intriguing and provides insight into the mind-body link, it doesn't imply that placebos can take the place of all treatments. Treatment for many illnesses still involves targeted, proactive medical measures. The idea that placebos are merely "fake treatments" has to be dispelled. In actuality, they provide insightful perspectives into the depths of the human brain and the amazing interaction between our bodies and minds. This field forces us to rethink how we think about medicine, healing, and the power of belief as we continue to study it. #ClinicalResearch #PlaceboEffect #MindBodyConnection
