This reality shouldn't exist in a nation with our resources. 𝐑𝐚𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐃𝐢𝐬𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐢𝐧 𝐇𝐮𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐫 The burden falls heaviest on 𝐁𝐥𝐚𝐜𝐤 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐋𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐨 𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐝𝐫𝐞𝐧, with food insecurity rates at 22% and 21% respectively, compared to 9% for white households. 𝐔𝐫𝐛𝐚𝐧 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐬, 𝐔𝐧𝐞𝐪𝐮𝐚𝐥 𝐀𝐜𝐜𝐞𝐬𝐬 While rural areas tend to have higher SNAP participation rates, many urban families facing greater need struggle due to several factors such as a higher cost of living. 𝐆𝐞𝐭 𝐑𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐲 𝐅𝐞𝐬𝐭: 𝐀𝐝𝐝𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐔𝐫𝐛𝐚𝐧 𝐅𝐨𝐨𝐝 𝐈𝐧𝐬𝐞𝐜𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐲 Programs like ours, The Malcolm Jenkins Foundation Get Ready Fest, offer a lifeline. We provide 7-10 𝐝𝐚𝐲𝐬' 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐡 𝐨𝐟 𝐦𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐟𝐚𝐦𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐛𝐞𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐬𝐜𝐡𝐨𝐨𝐥 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐬, a critical time when expenses surge. This helps ease the burden for families facing food insecurity and allows them to focus on other necessities for their children. We’re inspired by Food Strong, a Cleveland-based nonprofit taking bold steps toward food justice and sustainability. Their latest initiative, the Superior Farm Fix-Up, is an ambitious 5-year project to transform a vacant property at Superior Avenue and East 67th Street into a thriving urban farm and community resource hub. 🚜 In the heart of Cleveland, this effort will: ✅ Combat systemic food insecurity using regenerative agriculture to supply affordable, healthy produce to local residents and schools. ✅ Provide educational programs, skills training, and entrepreneurial opportunities. ✅ Serve as a community-driven hub where people can access affordable food, resources, and small business support. By emphasizing collaboration and sustainability, Food Strong is creating more than a farm—it’s building resilience and opportunity for Northeast Ohio. This past Tuesday was Hunger Action Day! CEO Scott Rumpsa joined The Morning Mix on Fox 17 to share how neighbors like you can help nourish our neighbors and build a stronger, healthier communtiy. Hunger doesn’t exist in a vacuum. Families who struggle to access the food they need often face other challenges, and a setback in one area creates a ripple effect across systems: education, childcare, employment, housing, healthcare, food, finances, and transportation. Complex problems require holistic solutions - that’s why we combine healthy food access, resource navigation, financial empowerment, and street outreach to build a community where all of our neighbors have what they need to thrive, and no one faces challenges alone. Every family should be able to access the programs that can help them thrive. But the reality is that some families face more barriers to getting the support they need. That’s why we’re so proud to partner with Generations United in their mission of supporting grandfamilies—families in which children are raised by relatives other than their parents, including grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, or siblings—who face increased risks of food insecurity. This year, a record 101 youth organizations participated in the Deb and Jeff Hansen Foundation’s Ignite the Spirit program. Through this program, FFA, 4-H and other youth-based organizations receive $500 and 4 cases of pork loin to create their own service project to address hunger and food insecurity in their community. Organizations pick up the pork loins at Operation Christmas Meal stops throughout the month of December and then work with other hunger-fighting organizations in their area to prepare their project. Examples of projects include community meals and holiday meal boxes. Groups were spread across the whole state, with projects occurring in 47 counties.

Our very own Leslie G. sheds light on the pressing issue of child hunger in NYC in a recent op-ed featured in amNewYork. As #NYC schools switch to summer break, many kids experience reduced access to nutritious meals, leaving families to face the challenge of providing additional meals for their children who heavily rely on free school meals.   In a city where 23.5% of children live in food-insecure households—equating to over 416,000 kids struggling to access sufficient nutrition—support from food banks, summer programs, and soup kitchens becomes crucial.   Despite the availability of resources, many eligible children miss out due to a lack of awareness or accessibility.
