INSIGHTS FOR SUPPLY, ENDING STOCKS, AND PRICES FROM FSA ACREAGE DATA — by Jason Franken and Joseph Janzen On Aug. 12, the National Agricultural Statistics Service of the USDA released new planted acreage estimates for major crops in its monthly Crop Production report. For the first time, NASS used data on crop acreage enrolled in farm programs from the USDA Farm Service Agency to update in August its planted acreage estimates for corn and soybeans. In previous years, NASS only updated acreage estimates for corn and soybeans using FSA data in September. This change reflects that, in recent years, nearly all planted acres are enrolled in FSA farm programs and those acres are nearly all enrolled by August. The Crop Production report lowered the corn planted area estimate from 91.5 to 90.7 million acres and increased the soybean estimate from 86.1 to 87.1 million acres. In this farmdoc daily article, we apply a procedure for using FSA acreage enrollment data to estimate final crop acreage. Our estimates suggest that 2024 corn and soybean acres are close to USDA’s long-run baseline projections for acreage and slightly higher than current NASS estimates. These production levels imply farm prices for corn and soybeans slightly below current USDA forecasts. Read more: https://lnkd.in/gnyfJrQC #corn #soybeans #acreage #planted #prices #fsa #crop

USDA’s Prospective Plantings is one of the most important reports of the year. It brings the total major crops acreage that American farmers intend on planting in the coming cycle (24/25). Thus, it sets the tone for the supply side of the balance for the whole year. In 2024, the Prospective Planting confirmed market’s expectation of a switch to soybean in the farmer’s planting decision. Even though market was already expecting this change, the cut to corn acreage (-4.6M ac vs 2023) was way bigger than market’s average estimate (-2.8M ac). The report also added a slightly bearish pressure to wheat, as cut to total wheat area wasn’t as huge as expected. This year, the report showed US farmers intend to cut planted area by more than 3M ac. Agents were expecting this to be a soybean-oriented cycle, however, with a smaller increase on cotton and bigger cut on corn, total acreage was much smaller than expected. That shows farmers were more sensitive to the low-prices scenario. #hEDGEpointglobalmarkets #USDA #Soybean #Corn #Wheat #UnitedStates

Sometimes too much of a good thing is bad for business. Bumper crops are posing challenges for American farmers this year, impacting crop prices and leading growers to cut back on essentials like fertilizer and equipment. The US Department of Agriculture forecasts record-large yields for corn and soybeans amid weak global demand. Despite crop tour projections slightly below USDA estimates, numerous scouts confirm expectations for massive harvests. Substantial inventories have driven soybean and corn futures to their lowest levels since 2020, while wheat futures hit a four-year low recently, with production expected to surge by 9% from last year. Consequently, farmers are facing a significant 26% income decline in 2021, marking the largest drop since 2006. #Agriculture #USFarming #CropChallenges
