CEO at SAMPRA. Board Member of SCAPR. MSc in International Public Policy: Queen Mary University of London (2023). MEd: Wits University.
We, SAMPRA, have laid criminal charges against restaurant chain group Life and Brand Portfolio and its directors in their individual capacities for unpaid royalties. Life and Brand Portfolio owns a chain of restaurants: La Parada, Tiger’s Milk, Harbour House and Grand Africa. Also Lucky Fish and Chips, Live Bait, The Lookout, and Old Town Italy. The restaurants have unlawfully been playing music belonging to recording artists and record companies that are members of SAMPRA and members of CMOs around the world with whom SAMPRA has bilateral agreements. They have refused to pay the applicable licence fees that would enable them to comply with the prescribed legislative provisions. This effectively means that the artists whose music is used by these restaurants have not be able to earn royalties for the public performance of their music. We have been trying to negotiate with the group over the past four years. Life and Brand Portfolio is, however, adamant in its stance of using music illegally, thereby depriving artists of their right to earn income from their music. Litigation is not our preferred approach when it comes to licencing music users. It really is a last resort. We cannot, however. in good conscience, allow businesses to exploit musicians while we standby and watch. Musicians also have families to support and financial obligations to meet.

Sonic Branding x Music Marketing x Music Export | Award-winning Singer-songwriter | Professional DJ | Ex-Yahoo | Ex-ABS-CBN | The Music Guy from the Philippines
Going on year 2 of our partnership with the lovely folks at Philippine Retailers Association (PRA) as their Official #InStoreMusic provider. Though we have been providing music for stores, hotels, gyms and resorts since 2016, we've learned so much about this industry (post pandemic) because of this partnership - ushered in by the late, great Ms. Evelyn Salire. We've been really able to refine the platform and service that we offer in PH, and we strive to make it better and better as we sign new clients this year and beyond. If you or anyone you know have ever had to deal with the headache of: -sifting through thousands of songs every month or so -putting these songs on a USB (some retailers we have encountered still burn CDs!) then needing to ship them to all your branches -making sure your teams play the songs you prepared instead of their own playlists -having to figure out how to plug in your promos/announcements in there somehow (and having to produce/record said messages) -add to that: navigating the bewildering waters of FILSCAP and PRM ...then we can definitely help with our cloud-based, fully-digital, plug-and-play service. Our credo at HOMONYM PH is we make branded experiences #BetterWithSound, after all 🤘🏼 Watch out for us at your next PRA events. DM is the 🎼 #SoundStrategy #SoundEnhancedBrands #SoundMachine #RetailBranding #RetailMedia #RetailMarketing #BackgroundMusic #OverheadMusic
New year, exciting plans! 🥰 Had a great lunch with our friends at the Philippine Retailers Association (PRA), strengthening our alliance as the Official In-store Music Partner of the PRA. Can't wait to share what we're working on with you soon! With us are PRA's Ivan Verzonilla, Mayan Sangil, Bing Miranda, Aira Villanueva and Grace Reclosado.

Delhi High Court Takes a Stand Against Ticket Scalping for Diljit Dosanjh’s Concert The Delhi High Court has recently called upon the Centre to respond to a petition aiming to ban the practice of ticket scalping for Diljit Dosanjh's highly anticipated concert. Ticket scalping, the resale of tickets at inflated prices by unauthorized sellers, has long been a problem for fans trying to attend major events. The petition seeks stricter regulations to ensure tickets are sold at face value, making live performances accessible to all. This Court case highlights the widespread frustration among fans who are often forced to pay exorbitant rates to attend such events. With tickets being sold out within minutes only to reappear on unofficial resale platforms, fans are voicing their concerns on social media about this growing problem. Many are hopeful that legal intervention will bring fairness to the process and end the exploitation of genuine concertgoers. If the High Court rules in favor of the plea, it could result in much-needed legal reforms. These reforms may include better digital monitoring of ticket sales, penalties for scalpers, and enhanced consumer protection laws to ensure a transparent system. Such actions would be a significant step toward curbing ticket scalping for not only concerts but other major public events in India. This development sets the stage for broader discussions on consumer rights in the entertainment industry, addressing the long-standing issue of inflated ticket prices. A positive outcome could serve as a model for future cases, making live events more accessible and affordable for all. #DelhiHighCourt #TicketScalping #DiljitDosanjh #Concerts #ConsumerRights #FairTicketing #EntertainmentLaw

After Parties and Late Nights are a great event format that can really elevate a venue and connect with different audiences. Howie Schnee shares a ton of insights in this 15-minute interview all about After Parties. Some takeaways: 🥳 Target audiences that like to stay out late (probably not great for family events, but a great new use for a traditionally family-focused spaced. Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium does a great job of this with their Late Nights at the Zoo). 🥳 Make it unique. Events are competitive. You can give yourself an edge by doing something unique. Go deeper for the fans or put a twist on something traditional. 🥳 Create partnerships. If booking talent isn't your strong suite, offer favorable terms to a local, well-connected promoter. 🥳 Support a cause the artist cares about. If you're piggy-backing off a big name performing nearby, consider supporting a cause they care about to improve relations with them and their fans. Howie dives into the details in the video below. Give Howie Schnee a follow too. He's often sharing great insights from his decades as a promoter.
The concept of the After Party is a topic that comes up a lot with venues and up-and-coming promoters. Howie Schnee, Co-Founder and President of CEG Presents [CEG Inc.], has been hosting wildly popular Phish After Parties in NYC since the 90's. He's also promoted many other After Parties in NYC, New Orleans during Jazz Fest, and elsewhere. Howie generously shares his insights and experience about what makes a great after party that will sell out and be... a great party. #venue #promoter #musicindustry #concerts #events

Art for Art sake - money for God’s sake I, in a past life, was a music festival caterer selling wood- fired pizza - in deed my daughter Caitlin still owns and run a much smaller version of that business At one of these festivals I was privileged to meet 10CC who told me their parents, when they were just starting out in the music business were most upset about their choice of profession quoting the above phrase Fortunately they were not put off by this “sensible” advice and of course the above phrase became the title of one of their many hits. 10CC found a way of making money from their art Repurposing and converting old, redundant buildings is a mix of both art and the making of money. If you can do that, mix your passion with your business - well it’s just a lot more enjoyable experience and I think retaining Society’s street scape and history adds to everybody’s pleasure and as you have to work with the building, results in unique dwellings and holiday spaces which is a breath of fresh air in a modern standardised world Of course that is me, others are only interested in square footage , but I do think “ beauty, volume and history” has a value of its own and fortunately I am not alone in so thinking #propertydevelopment #selfcateringholiday #shorttermlet #housingemergency #propertyinvestment #citybreak

Watch Me Shoehorn The Most Interesting Phenomenon in Independent Music into a Discussion About My Accounting Firm Niching is all the rage within accounting firmrunning circles, and with good reason. The refrain is almost always that you're not niched *enough*. But what if there's another way to think about niching? Enter Australian psych-rock/jazz-fusion/prog-rock/thrash-metal sensation King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard. You might think based on the name alone that something strange is afoot, and you'd be right. Let's start with some numbers: - 25 albums released in 10 years - Released 5 albums in one year....*twice* (2017 and 2023) - Released a trio of albums based on microtonal harmony (and made it work three times) - Didn't release an album for 55 weeks and instead playing 113 shows in that time period. - The wikipedia entry for KGLW states that the genres they've covered include: psychedelic rock, garage rock, acid rock, progressive rock, surf rock, krautrock, psychedelic pop, indie rock, neo-psychedelia, thrash metal, stoner metal, progressive metal, sludge, folk, jazz, Tropicália, synth-prog, and microtonal music. King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard, then, is the antithesis of niching at least as it's usually defined. There are no labels, no constraints, and they certainly don't have a website that only caters to serving physician practices based on the West Coast in beach communities. But to anyone into music, it's woefully apparent that KGLW is about the most niched interest that any music fan into moderately mainstream music can have. You're not going to hear many I-V-vi-IV chord progressions, and you have to be as at home listening to jazz as you are metal. And therein lies the niche: people interested in complex harmony and innovative soundscaping, folks who have it bad for always hearing something new and fresh to their ears. And it works for King Gizzard. They have their own music festival which sells out annually. They routinely play 3 and 4 night residences at some of the largest and most prestigious venues worldwide. Their merch store is constantly sold out of popular items, and they answer to no music label, executives, or higher music industry power. How does this relate to accounting? For Seamless, we've taken a similar approach to niching. Our niche is not based on industry; we're agnostic to industry. Instead, our niche is the nature of our clients and what they have in common. They're almost always family-owned, entrepreneur-operated business with thin or non-existent middle management staffing who face the same problems regardless of industry. We're able to take the same base playbook and tweak it across a multitude of industries, much the same way King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard takes the same approach to complex and innovative harmony and applies it across a variety of genres. I'll take a bow for this very tortured metaphor and wish you a very happy Thursday
