As a civil engineer and avid surfer, I've experienced firsthand the indescribable beauty of riding the waves and immersing myself in the vastness of the ocean. 🏄♂️ Surfing is more than just a sport – it's a spiritual experience that allows me to connect with Mother Nature in a way that's difficult to put into words. It's like trying to describe color to the blind – you have to feel it to truly understand. 💧But beyond the joy and exhilaration of surfing lies a deeper understanding of the importance of ocean preservation. As someone deeply involved in disaster risk reduction efforts, particularly in the small island developing states of the Caribbean, I know firsthand the critical role that the ocean plays in our lives. 🌎 The health of our oceans directly impacts our planet's resilience to natural disasters and climate change. What am I working towards? Surfing with a whale, like in this video. I live in the Basque Country, which used to be a whale hotspot. Until commercial whaling started here. Now, there are only a few & I haven't seen one around the beaches. So, all the work I am doing here & hope to get you onboard... is to make the world wilder. To bend the trend & be the society in which the world didn't lose, but gained nature. We can all do our parts. 🐋 3 Actions for whales: # 1 Support. Whale NGOs like Sea Shepherd Global or World Cetacean Alliance # 2 Reduce pressure. If you live on the coast, check how pollution (plastic, noise, pesticides, sewage), shipping, and fishing can be reduced locally. Good for your too. # 3 Company impact. Check if your company has an impact on whales. E.g. 80% of global trade is done via cargo ships. So this doesn't affect only fishing & oil drilling companies. Be aware of where you go swimming and surfing! The article from The Brockovich Report lists the top 10 most polluted beaches, highlighting severe water quality issues. Imperial Beach in San Diego tops the list due to chronic pollution from cross-border sewage and a failing treatment plant. Other polluted sites include Park View Kayak Launch in Miami, Ballard Park in Melbourne, and Playa Crashboat in Puerto Rico. This report emphasizes the dire state of U.S. beach water quality, with many locations exceeding unsafe bacteria levels due to outdated sewage infrastructure and stormwater runoff. https://lnkd.in/g8HrEhGK

The cost of building the perfect wave: The growing business of surf pools wants to bring the ocean experience inland. But with many planned for areas facing #WaterScarcity, who bears the cost? An analysis by MIT Tech Review reveals that of an estimated 162 #SurfPools that have been built or announced around the world, 54 are in areas considered by World Resources Institute WRI Water to face high or extremely high water stress. #WaterStress means a location regularly uses a large portion of its available surface #WaterSupply annually. Regions in the "extremely high" category consume 80% or more of their water, while those in the "high" category use 40% to 80% of their supply. Just focusing on the U.S., nearly half of the surf pools that have been built or announced are in places with high or extremely high water stress — roughly 16 in areas served by the severely drought-stricken #ColoradoRiver. "Beaches are one of the most dynamic environments on the planet." - Chad Nelsen, Ph.D., CEO of The Surfrider Foundation. In this idea of how do we shift trillions into climate solutions, I have been wondering about how do we start to economically value natural resources if that's the language we need to get people to change behaviors. And there's one story I know, which is from my surf life, about creating an economic value of surf spot calledTrestles (I have a few posts surfing this wave in my feed) by Chad. The core idea is that surfers spend money where there are waves, and so having a non-polluted, high quality wave is valuable to the local economy, because surfers will regularly drive long distances to surf good waves. Some of the most iconic beach towns in CA are built around great waves (Malibu, Huntington Beach, Blacks in La Jolla, Trestles in San Clemente). The most important piece seems to be the way this information and economic data helps his organization defend against giant projects like oil drilling. They stopped a freeway going through a watershed in San Clemente. They helped stop oil drilling off the east coast. This is such a powerful way to start to understand how valuable the world around us is to our life, and yet at the same time, this is just scratching the surface on the complexity of the value of an ecosystem. I see the ability to perfectly value an ecosystem as being almost impossible to determine due to the value of all the life in it. But that's not the point, the point is that it helps us speak a language that can protect the world we live in.
