Wildlife rescue and rehabilitation in CT is performed by state certified volunteers because of their love and belief in wildlife. Here a Peregrine falcon is rescued in the dark night and released once healed. This is a story with a positive ending. So many of our stories do not end well. This is almost always due to human activity: rodenticide poisoning, hit by car, land development and nest disturbances, etc. https://lnkd.in/eTAkbvBx

Did you know wombat burrows are lifesavers during wildfires? New research shows that these deep, complex burrows provide crucial shelter for a variety of wildlife, helping them survive devastating fires. Researchers found that small mammals, reptiles, and birds use these burrows to escape the flames and harsh conditions post-fire. The stable temperatures and structural protection offered by wombat burrows create safe havens for many species, supporting ecosystem recovery in fire-impacted areas. Wombats are indeed the unsung heroes of Australia's bushfire-prone landscapes! Learn more in this #NYTimes article: https://nyti.ms/3VCgpOn

Great news that will help Maryland make progress towards its 40% by 2040 #landpreservation goal. A new wildlife refuge in Southern Maryland is the Chesapeake Bay’s first in over 25 years via #TheBaltimoreBanner. The Southern Maryland Woodlands National Wildlife Refuge would protect up to 40,000 acres spread across a large area spanning Anne Arundel, Calvert, Charles, Prince George’s and St. Mary’s counties. https://ow.ly/H6ua50Us4OE

This just in, underwater potatoes have gathered for a meeting at Crystal River National Wildlife Refuge Complex. What's that? Those aren't potatoes? Those are manatees? Apologies. We'll make the correction. This just in, Florida manatees have huddled up at the Three Sisters Springs to stay warm during the recent cold weather in Florida. The gentle sea cows will rest along the sandy bottom of the spring as they conserve their energy and seek shelter in the warm (72 degrees Fahrenheit) spring waters. Photo by Emily Jung/USFWS

Shocking News from Madikwe Game Reserve: A Call for Accountability and Action As a safari travel specialist and someone deeply invested in Africa’s wildlife and conservation, I am utterly shocked and saddened by the recent news from Madikwe Game Reserve. The National Council of SPCAs (NSPCA) has highlighted severe issues with overpopulation, poor veld management, and neglect, resulting in heartbreaking outcomes for the wildlife we all hold dear. Reports of malnourished animals, including elephants and other species in dire conditions, are deeply distressing. The reserve, once celebrated for its wildlife and conservation efforts, now faces what can only be described as a crisis. This situation raises critical questions: • How was this allowed to happen? • What role did suppliers, stakeholders, and management play—or fail to play—in preventing this tragedy? • What immediate measures are being taken to alleviate the suffering and ensure this doesn’t happen again? As travel professionals, we work closely with suppliers to create experiences that celebrate Africa’s natural beauty while prioritizing responsible tourism and conservation. Stories like this shake the foundation of trust we build with our clients, who travel to these destinations expecting ethical and sustainable practices. I would like to urge our suppliers and partners to step forward and transparently share their efforts to address this crisis. We must collectively push for accountability, sustainable solutions, and a renewed commitment to preserving the ecosystems we rely on for travel and tourism. This is a wake-up call for all of us in the industry. Conservation is not just a buzzword—it is a responsibility. Let’s open the conversation. I’d love to hear from others in the travel and conservation community: • What are your thoughts on this tragedy? • How can we as an industry prevent such situations in the future? Together, we can and must do better—for the wildlife, the environment, and the travelers who trust us to guide them to Africa’s treasures. #Madikwe #WildlifeConservation #ResponsibleTourism #Safari #AfricaTravel #TravelAfricanTime
📸WARNING: GRAPHIC CONTENT📸 "CONSERVATION" AND STARVATION: MADIKWE GAME RESERVE A WILDLIFE TRAGEDY 🚨 The NSPCA’s Wildlife Protection Unit is horrified at the situation playing out at the Madikwe Game Reserve situated in the North West, bordering Botswana. Flaunting themselves as the “fifth largest game reserve in South Africa” and “one of the best conservation areas in Africa”, the scores of elephants and other wildlife experiencing long, suffering deaths tells another story. 🐘 ➡️ Read more about this devastating situation here: https://lnkd.in/d4iFjiwh #NSPCA #SPCA #WildlifeProtection #AnimalWelfare #Madikwe
