As the Paris 2024 Olympics come to a close, the city has set a new standard for integrating its cultural landmarks and urban spaces into the event. With minimal new construction, Paris reimagined sports within its historic environment, making temporary use of its iconic sites while highlighting the city's rich heritage. This approach minimized environmental impact while showcasing Paris's architectural treasures. Looking ahead, the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles will take a similar path. Scheduled for July 14–30, LA28 will focus on utilizing existing infrastructure and venues across Greater Los Angeles. Unlike previous Olympic Games, no new permanent venues are planned, a conscious decision to reduce financial and environmental costs. Instead, sports parks will host events in areas like Downtown LA, Long Beach, and Carson, continuing the trend of sustainable urban development. Made it to Utrecht, Netherlands for the traditional urban design summer school! A great first day with an afternoon excursion around the historic medieval town. Some observations I made from day 1: The first is an example of a two-way street here in Utrecht similar in width to what you'd find in a New Zealand suburb. The visual language of the street is broken up in a way where cars are more aware and careful of their surroundings. This results in naturally slower speeds and a safer environment for pedestrians and cyclists. The second to follow...
