According to a new survey by NBBJ and The New York Academy of Sciences, the majority of scientists say building design impacts where they want to work. So, how can we create research buildings that support the breakthroughs happening inside?     We surveyed 1,059 scientists to find out. Today, we release Part 2 of our survey, focused on sustainability, flexibility and technology.       For example, a resounding 83% of scientists report that it’s important for buildings to reduce carbon and energy—a matter that’s increasingly critical to address given that 60% of modern science buildings do not meet modern sustainability standards.       To learn more, click here: https://lnkd.in/gu5mmCCJ

Cultures of Regeneration Humboldt University, Berlin, DE The Cluster »Matters of Activity« aims to create a basis for a new culture of materials. The central vision of the Cluster is to rediscover the analog in the activity of images, spaces and materials in the age of the digital. Biology and technology, mind and material, nature and culture intertwine in a new way. In this context, the interdisciplinary research and development of sustainable practices and structures is a central concern in areas such as architecture and soft robotics, textiles, materials and digital filters, and surgical cutting techniques. Rapidly increasing socio-ecological damage and the urgent need for care, repair and recovery has led to renewed calls for regenerative design as a means of wayfinding towards new forms of just and sustainable life on earth, prompting critical questions concerning the reconfigured pasts they invoke to the possible futures they open up. Aiming to (re)design the way we live to support the functioning of natural ecosystems, regenerative systems thinking is being applied to fundamental fields of human activity, from food production and agriculture to textiles, architecture, rural revival and the urban built environment to other-worldy materialities. In this insightful keynote speech, Professor Lucy Kimbell dives into the evolving role of design in public policy. “Public sector innovation or government innovation requires all the capacities of design to help us collectively anticipate and prepare for the complexities and uncertainties of the world we live in, including urgent climate change.” Prof. Kimbell explores how co-creation and futures thinking can help navigate these complexities and discusses the necessary conditions for design to be effective and what the future might hold for design leaders and educators.
