How can the UK deliver 1.5m high quality homes and places and meet the challenges of the climate crisis? For this event we have gathered an expert panel discussing how the UK and other countries are tackling sustainable housing at scale. What can we learn from large housing programmes overseas? In 1996 the Netherlands undertook the 10 year Vinex progamme, an ambitious project to deliver over 1m new homes across the Netherlands. With new communities added to almost every town and city. Between 1965-1974 Sweden's Milion Programme (Miljonprogrammet) aimed to deliver 1m affordable, high quality homes across Sweden. Whether through new towns, estate regeneration or retrofit, what can we learn from each other and how can different approaches by applied to the UK context? With a mix of UK expertise and international inspiration, the event will attempt to uncover how collaboration, design, and sustainability can shape housing policies and practices to meet the needs of people and the planet. The Adelaide City Council faces challenges in driving economic and population growth due to a lack of depth in experience and strategic direction. Despite infrastructure capable of supporting significant population increases, the Council has struggled to meet growth targets, primarily attributed to a perceived lack of "social responsibility" and lacking inclusive investment practices. Historically, the Council has overseen urban projects with minimal requirements for affordable housing, hindering the city's ability to address its housing needs. In contrast, one of my previous major urban projects, successful initiatives like Melbourne Central in Melbourne, has demonstrated the transformative power of strategic urban renewal. Become Australia's largest urban renewal project, it spurred over $9bn of new investment in a previously neglected precinct of the City of Melbourne. Reflecting on past projects, such as Melbourne Central, which has attracted significant investment and foot traffic, underscores the potential for Adelaide to undergo a similar revitalization by the end of this year. Around 50m annually by the end of this year are expected for Melbourne Central in a previously neglected precinct of the City of Melbourne. With the right approach and commitment to inclusive development, Adelaide could emerge as a thriving CBD destination, leveraging its existing infrastructure to accommodate a growing population. The City of Adelaide stands at a critical juncture, poised to address its affordable housing crisis and unlock its full growth potential. 💡New ideas need old buildings?🤔 At the recent Malmö Real Estate Research Conference, we looked at how cities change. In the closing session, we particularly focussed on the role of old, existing buildings and their potential to enrich cultural life. An example from Malmö: Lokstallarna (The locomotive stables) in the Malmö district of Kirseberg. Lokstallarna, as an old building, has a rich history: Built in 1914, it has changed from being Sweden’s largest workshop and a big employer to needing to be used in a different way. The concept that new ideas can emerge from old buildings, encapsulated in the leading phrase "new ideas need old buildings," demonstrates the potential for Lokstallarna to be utilized in novel ways, such as a venue for new residences, businesses, and diverse events. Central to the discussions was the aim of creating vibrant urban environments by integrating cultural vitality with urban development. Key takeaways from the closing session:  - Tailored solutions and early stakeholder engagement are vital for effectively balancing preservation with adaptation.  - Urban transformation has an iterative nature, which is particularly important to embrace when it comes to industrial spaces and their physical structures and land use considerations. - In order to create real value, spaces must be activated: When spaces are occupied, it translates into community enrichment.
