Why is hands on, real-world experience so essential for students? Robb Berg, Principal of Design Workshop, highlights the importance of shaping the next generation of landscape architects through involvement outside the traditional classroom environment. There is often a gap between the theoretical approach taught in the classroom and the practical application on real projects. "Working for communities and with clients means understanding construction budgets, managing time constraints, navigating material limitations, and many more challenges, all the while trying to create meaningful and impactful work," says Robb. It is important to invest in this upcoming generation of young professionals, and Design Workshop’s Design Week and the Dr. Charles Fountain Internship Program are two examples of how we are providing practical experience for undergraduate and graduate students. In 2023 as a whole, I have learnt a lot. If I start listing them, it starts to sound like a brag. Updating my LinkedIn regularly would be a better idea than a year-end dump of all I've done. It started with an update of my portfolio, applying to different firms for my internship, interviewing and deciding the pros and cons of working in each firm. Volunteering and attending workshops at NIUA. Getting certified in software. Working with people in the industry and gaining a humanised perspective of the field of architecture. The last bit sounds funny but it's the most profound thing that I've come to realise. While studying all I saw were the buildings, bricks, RCC, services, sheets, and submissions. I never saw the people behind it all. Cursing the architects of the building we have to survey because the levelling of the staircases is weird *cough* Triveni Kala Sangam *cough*. That is something to be discussed some other time. The main takeaway is that the building isn't faulty because it's made by a man. To err is human. Rather the building is incomplete for the future to improve. In the end, i'll leave you with something funny that happens to everyone at some point, until the next post...

Yesterday 12th January 2024, marked the end of our Fall 2023-24 semester, with the Final Jury being conducted for the 7th semester students. This semester's topic of design was a Commercial Bank's Head Office branch. Our instructors were expecting a modernist design approach from the students. For my concept, I integrated the use of Aluminium Facade blades into an overall concept of Biophilic Design that generally revolves around sustainability. Therefore, a major dominating feature of my facade design was the use of green screens or green walls, which I have always wanted to implement in my projects. Another preference that I opted for in this project was the use of Stucco Cladding, due to its durable and sustainable nature. This corporate-level project was a good opportunity for me to learn the use of materials as well as develop basic knowledge on how to develop basements in commercial projects while making them accessible for parking purposes. It also allowed me to learn the use of base-isolation systems to prevent damage to the super-structures, during earthquakes. I would like to thank the course instructors, Dr. Vedia Akansu and Dr. İPEK YARALIOĞLU, and our jury member, Dr. Osman Göztaşı for their valuable feedback and guidance during the semesters and both the midterm / final term juries. I would like to mention my gratitude to Mr Muhammad Yasin, who was my supervisor during my summer internship, in 2023. It was due to his efforts and guidance that I had the privilege of working on government-based projects, which allowed me to have my initial exposure to the usage of materials, as well as Curtain wall glazings. A concluding note of thanks to my family, friends other seniors from my internship, whose encouragement and guidance allowed me to finish this semester on a positive note. #architecturedesign #3dvisualization #3dmodeling #archicad #sketchup #rendering #commercialdesign #banking #facadedesign

A conceptual sketch from last year when I was working on residential planning for a client at an internship. Yellow hatching, is the double height cut out which the client made necessary apart from vastu planning. The journey of planning was hard work. But i made it till the end and now it's in the construction phase. Visualizing Before on a piece of paper and then working on software practically works. #architecture #concept

Architectural Designer | Construction and Project Manager| BIM consultant | Sustainability and Environmental Advocate
THE DRIVING FORCE Driven by a fervent passion for architecture, a young graduate embarked on a relentless journey, dedicating five pivotal years to honing skills in architectural design, project supervision, and construction management. This immersive experience became the crucible for understanding the intricacies of the industry. Fuelled by an unwavering ambition, the graduate delved into a master's program in Construction and Project Management. Sacrifices echoed in late-night study sessions, as blueprints and project plans became nocturnal companions. The sacrifice wasn't merely a temporal commitment but a profound investment in knowledge, a currency more valuable than the sleepless nights it cost. Navigating the complex nexus of academia and professional experience, the graduate seamlessly fused theoretical frameworks with practical insights. The sacrifice materialized in missed social engagements and weekend getaways – exchanges for gaining expertise that transcended the classroom. Internships evolved from mere stepping stones to foundation stones, bridging academic insights with real-world challenges. The sacrifice manifested in the melding of design finesse with the strategic acumen required to navigate the multifaceted realm of construction and project management. This sacrificial narrative isn't just a chronicle of toil but a testament to resilience. Sacrifice turned the graduate into an architect of their destiny, one blueprint at a time. Each sacrifice etched a line in the narrative of professional growth, transforming a young architectural enthusiast into a seasoned professional, ready to construct a future of remarkable achievements. #architecturaldesign #construction #projectmanagement #engineeringdesign #sustainabledevelopment

If there ever comes a time when we can manipulate time (let's just ignore how that statement can mess with the mind for now), would I take up the opportunity to do so? The age gap in our team can be up to 2 decades (20 years!!). And obviously it will only increase with time. Typical generational cultural disconnects aside, our respective professional attitudes inevitably also differ. It can be a source of conflict, even though the field of work is clearly the same - in design or architecture. This is further complicated when you bring in another party - the client. How they engage with us, will inevitably also be a reflection of how their own generation deal with matters concerning professional work. It can be complex dynamic! I very often struggle with finding the balance. It seems simple enough: understand the client, understand my team tasked to that project, understand my own professional expectations as someone approaching my mid-40s, understand the whole consultant team. Then give up and dive in with eyes open. Maybe that's all that matters. Treat the passage of time as what it is - something that ceaselessly moves forward, taking us all along for a ride so long as we are mindful, and don't take the minutiae too seriously. Afterall, as my parents used to tell me laughingly, despite my distinct lack of amusement, 'Last time policemen used to wear shorts....'. #prosearchitects #staycoolandfunky #policemenusedtowearshorts https://lnkd.in/ghgnFqNQ
Not many events (other than TOP dates) remind us of the passing of time more than a valued colleague leaving to pursue further studies. Celeste Ng joined us with a Part 1 Bachelor of Architecture from National University of Singapore a year ago on 1 July 2023 with an intention of gaining some experience working in a small architecture practice before furthering her studies with a Part 2 Masters of Architecture. Fast forward a year, after witnessing first hand the ups and downs, highs and fumbles of Prose Architects, she leaves us to embark on another exciting chapter of her life. We wish her all the best and to enjoy her experiences always. Serendipitously, Prani Patton rejoins us after a short internship stint in 2023, now with a newly obtained Part 1 Bachelor of Architecture from Melbourne. In a similar fashion, she will be with us for at least a year, before she furthers her studies with a Part 2 Master of Architecture. Below wefie by Alvin Liau after a team lunch, with the best backdrop we can find in the vicinity. We are open to alternative backdrop suggestions for that lunch/dinner a year later... #claritythroughdesign #prosearchitects #funatwork #selfimprovement

I have officially reached the end of my 12 month internship under the guidance of NPN architects and BZ Three Built Environment Consultants. I couldn’t have asked for a better work place environment as a “fresh out of university” Profesional Architect in the making. As I prepare for the next chapter architecture has for me, I would like to share a few things that I have learnt throughout my internship. 1. Ask! Don’t be afraid to ask for help, that’s how you learn. Be inquisitive, never leave a question unanswered. 2. Patience. Be patient with yourself. You’ve just started your professional career, you’re not supposed to know everything. 3. Draw. If all else fails go back to your drawing board with a piece of paper and a pen or pencil in your hand. I cannot wait to apply this pocket of knowledge as I further seek to learn from everything and everyone around me.
