As a successful senior commercial interior designer, I've had my fair share of experiences with male clients. While many have been professional and respectful, some have tested my boundaries and attempted to blur the lines. Early on in my career, I learned to set clear boundaries and maintain a professional demeanor. I've mastered the art of politely yet firmly shutting down inappropriate comments or advances, without compromising my dedication to delivering exceptional design solutions. One particular instance that comes to mind is when a male client consistently made suggestive remarks during meetings. I addressed the issue by calmly explaining my discomfort and refocusing the conversation on the project's objectives. My assertiveness and confidence in my expertise quickly established a respectful dynamic. Another time, a client attempted to undermine my authority by questioning my design decisions. I stood my ground, presenting logical explanations and data to support my choices. My preparedness and confidence in my work silenced any doubts and earned his respect. Throughout my career, I've developed strategies to maintain a professional distance while still building strong relationships with clients. I prioritize active listening, empathy, and open communication to understand their needs and deliver tailored solutions. My focus on excellence and dedication to my craft has earned me a reputation as a skilled and dependable designer. I take pride in my ability to navigate challenging situations with grace and professionalism, ensuring that my work remains the top priority. In the end, my experiences have taught me the importance of self-assurance, clear communication, and maintaining a strong sense of self-worth. I continue to thrive in my field, designing exceptional spaces and earning the respect of my clients and peers alike.

How do you define professionalism? Katharine Pooley, multi award winning international Interior designer, shared her thoughts on what makes an amazing candidate, and one key insight was how she defines professionalism. "Professionalism is reached from many angles – * Firm, confident handshake and looking into someone's eyes when speaking. * Appearance is important and making an effort (we are after all in the luxury business). * Not being afraid to speak up. * Having a list to do each day and trying to complete it (the list will only get bigger the next day). * Always come to a meeting with a notebook. * Never be afraid to work past 6pm - it shows willingness to learn. * Ask questions if you don't understand. * If you make a mistake learn from it. * Answering a phone call with a smile and helpful attitude always helps" You can read more of Katharine's top tips via our Resources Hub. https://lnkd.in/dBd7-2qm Photo credit: Katharine Pooley Design Studio https://lnkd.in/dyHhe9U8 #InteriorDesignTopTips #CreativeCareer #UnitedinDesign #InteriorDesignersUK

What universities and internahips don’t teach us is that working as an interior designer for a firm or a specific person, can be highly challenging due to the subjectivity. Interior designers have different tastes themselves and tend to follow one or mostly a few styles. “Aesthetically pleasing” could quite vary from a person to another. Miscommunication, on the other hand, could cause you difficulties to reach the goal of the company or person you’re working for. So, make sure as an interior designer to find the job position and the right person that suits your abilities, styles and work ethic.

Although I love all stages of designing (especially when everything is finished and you've dot the i), as an interior designer I also really love this stage - when all options are still open, when you somehow see everything that can be, you spin options and possibilities in your head ...and you have no idea what awaits you because, no matter how detailed you work out the project and plan, something unforeseen always pops up and messes up your plans, but actually part of the beauty of this job lies in this uncertainty. And that's why I love what I do - being an interior designer is the most beautiful job in the world.
