Attended an insightful CPD event by Engineers Australia on the "Holsworthy overbridge temporary retaining wall design and construction". Learnt about the challenges involved in constructing a temporary bridge support structure next to a live rail corridor. The case study highlighted the importance of careful planning and coordination between various stakeholders to minimize disruptions. Key learnings included the need for robust temporary works design validated through physical testing, value engineering to optimize costs, and implementing robust safety systems. So, I pride myself on writing a "report of expert opinions" that can be the basis for settling construction disputes without ending up in a court room. This week, my winning streak ended, and I ended up having to testify on a case we have been working on (maybe I am getting old and losing my edge...nah). Anyway, on a trip to the little dude's room, I noticed this and got distracted, had to take a picture, had to see if other conditions like this existed, ....had to remember to get my @$$ back on the bench! As I walked by in the judge was saying something to the effect of "all we need now is a witness". That would be me. Sorry your honor. Good thing she was most cool. As a side note, this is the top floor of the system, and the damage is NOT related to condensation from the AC grille. Testing different small-scale compartment opening dimensions and their effects on fire development. We witnessed instances of flashover, as well as backdraft from the least ventilated compartment. It's been really useful to contextualise how a fire looks and feels at different sizes and behaviours to have a more implicit understanding of the design fire characteristics that I ultilise while consulting on alternative fire engineering solutions in buildings. #mastersdegree #universityofcanterbury
