Sam Keung. Behind Closed Doors. 2008. Digital Photograph <Behind Closed Doors> received the 2nd prize 08 National Geographic International Photo Competition and Bronze Award from the HKDA Asia Design Awards 09. *** Behind Closed Doors is a photo series documenting the lives and living conditions of people living in squats in Hong Kong. This series covers around 50 households; among them, ten pictures were chosen for a competition. The series was shot between March and May 2008 in the Lower Ngau Tau Kok Estate, which consists of the remaining squats that have not yet been redeveloped. The clearance of this estate is planned to proceed in January 2009, symbolizing the last phase of the redevelopment of public housing estates. In the 1960s and 1970s, households used to keep their front doors open for better ventilation and to foster closer relationships among neighbors. Nowadays, people mostly keep their doors shut, which greatly alienates relationships among neighbors. Behind Closed Doors aims to explore how people in squats live by stepping into their homes. It also presents the audience with the issue of how squat residents perceive the intrusion of outsiders and foreign environments. #photography #culture #art

Erfolg in der digitalen Welt kommt nicht nur durch das Verstehen der Technologie, sondern auch durch das Verstehen der Menschen, die sie nutzen.
Urban decay, fire, and fog—discover my dystopian-themed photo magazine. I’m excited to share the launch of my first photo magazine, a project born from my creative exploration using different Midjourney style references. Over time, I’ve accumulated a vast vault of images, each crafted with simple prompts but brought to life through a variety of artistic styles. Rather than posting each one individually, I’ve chosen to curate them into thematic collections, starting with a series that delves into a dystopian future. The first issue explores a haunting vision of urban decay, where towering ruins, fire, and fog dominate empty streets. Each figure, shrouded in shadow, faces the overwhelming destruction of a world once full of life. Set against burning cities and eerie neon lights, the visuals evoke powerful themes of solitude, defiance, and human resilience. The striking contrast between glowing embers and the dark atmosphere adds depth to this portrayal of survival, offering a glimpse of hope amidst the desolation. I plan to release a new issue each month, each focusing on a different theme. Stay tuned for the next edition, where I’ll continue exploring new styles and creative ideas.

Discovering Elephant and Castle - A Journey Beyond Comfort Zones Arriving in Elephant and Castle for the first time felt like stepping into another world. In Suffolk, where I hail from, we say "on th' huh" when something feels skewed or out of place. This bustling London district certainly fits that description with its towering buildings, myriad transport links, and a density of people worlds away from Suffolk's sparse population. While Suffolk has about 520 people per square mile, Elephant and Castle in the borough of Southwark has a staggering 28,000 per square mile! The contrast was overwhelming. I came to Elephant and Castle for a photojournalism course at the London College of Communications. The assignment? Capture the essence of this neighbourhood, including its people and their stories. Our tutor, Terri, made it clear: this project was designed to push us out of our comfort zones. And she was right. Standing outside the college, the constant flow of people, cars, buses, and ongoing construction was intimidating. The challenge was to find a story in this chaos. As I delved deeper into the neighbourhood's history and observed its present, it became clear that the evolution of Elephant and Castle is not just a recent phenomenon. This area has been in a constant state of change for decades, with each phase leaving a unique imprint on the community. Over the next week, I'll share more about my journey through Elephant and Castle, uncovering its history, meeting its people, and exploring its unique character. Stay tuned for a week-long series of posts where I'll take you deeper into this fascinating neighbourhood. 📸✨ Picture: Self-portrait reflection in the windows of the ual: London College of Communications showing the motion yet isolation of the alien environment. 👇 Are you ready to explore new perspectives and push your boundaries? One of my biggest takeaways from architecture school was the ability to develop a narrative through design and visual storytelling. As a personal project through my fifth-year of architecture school, I created a photography book as a way to express my interest in photography through a curated, designed medium that was interesting to me. I saw this as an opportunity to work on a project type that I was passionate about, while on my own timeline. The scope of the project involved the photography, curation, design, sale, and distribution of books to interested buyers - as well as hosting a print sale. Thank you to all who have supported and have followed along at @seenbyseb. The 58 page publication, titled “At the Edge of the Known World'', was shot over the summer months of 2023 in my hometown of Salisbury, MA. I wanted to focus on telling a story about the connections between landscapes, architecture, and institutions through an artistic medium I’ve always had an interest in. Throughout the book, ideas of impermanence are introduced in a variety of ways - through narrative transitions in photographs of out-dated and under-utilized structures, contrasting portraits across age demographics, and through the cyclical nature of the ocean and beach town inhabitants. In my introductory text, I argue that “the camera is both a tool of resistance and a device of embrace towards motion.“ This sums up my goals towards the project, as it serves to present a story about a specific moment in time in a place that is built on inherently unstable ground. #photographybook #selfpublishing #blackandwhitephotography
