You and everyone you know should have a corporate headshot. In the digital era, technology and social media have revolutionized the importance of professional headshots for both individuals and companies. Your headshot is the new handshake. Yet, many of us hesitate to invest in professional photos. In a 2019 there was an independent study where they compared an old headshot to a new professional headshot and had people rate them on three things: Competence, likability, and influence. The study found that on average, perceived competence increased by over 75%, likability increased shy of 10%, and influence by 62%. So, what does each one mean? Competence - how successful or effective the person appears. Context, clothing, and the intention of a professional headshot are the most important factors. Your university grad photo might be good for social media, however, as your headshot for job hunting, it may hurt you more than it helps. Likability - how pleasant or likable the person appears. They concluded that the smaller increase explains why many people don't prioritize professional headshots. Likability is generally how we evaluate images of ourselves on social media and our online presence. However, we're being evaluated on different criteria in the professional world. Influence - how influential that person appears to be on other people. The data supports that a professional headshot has a dramatic effect on your influence if that is an important factor for you. While for some occupations, this isn't as important, authors, consultants, entrepreneurs are a few jobs where being influential is part of their job. One caveat we would like to end on is that the study has a small sample size, with 240 participants voting on three subjects: old and new headshots. Career Day at Bear River High last week, my wife caught this unflattering photo of us talking about media but it got your attention, so here’s what is important from that day. We talked to these students about how the profit margins in this industry are pretty amazing, but that it all really depends on how much value you can bring to people and how you position yourself. That understanding brought interesting conversations because I gave the analogy of a photographer that charges $200 a session vs. $7,000 a session. The service is basically the same… but it’s the confidence in the value and expertise you bring. If you just show up, make something, then call it a day, you’re worth as much as the $200 photographer. But if you strategize, help people grow, and help consult with people, you’re as valuable as the $7,000 photographer.
