📃Scientific paper: Global-MHD Simulations using MagPIE : Impact of Flux Transfer Events on the Ionosphere Abstract: This study presents a recently developed two-way coupled magnetosphere-ionosphere model named MagPIE that enables the investigation of the impact of flux transfer events (FTEs) on the ionosphere. Our findings highlight the prominent role of cusp-FTE reconnection in influencing the ionosphere. The typical morphology of an FTE signal, represented by field-aligned currents (FACs) on the ionosphere, is shown to exhibit a distinct pattern characterized by an I-shaped patch surrounded by a U-shaped patch. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the effects of FACs resulting from FTEs may extend well into the region of closed field lines on the ionosphere. These FACs are seen to exhibit a remarkable resemblance to discrete dayside auroral arcs, providing further evidence that FTEs can be considered as a probable cause of such phenomena. Additionally, FTEs generate vortex-like patterns of ionospheric flow, which can manifest as either twin vortices or a combination of multiple vortices, depending on the characteristics of the FACs producing them. Furthermore, we present compelling evidence of morphological similarity between the simulated ionospheric signatures obtained from the MagPIE model and an observation made by the SWARM satellites. The agreement between our model and observational data further strengthens the credibility of our model and opens up new avenues to theoretically explore the complex ionospheric effects caused by FTEs. ;Comment: 37 pages, 9 manuscript figures, 2... 🛰️We are happy to announce that our paper entitled "A Real-World Benchmark for Sentinel-2 Multi-Image Super-Resolution" - https://lnkd.in/dEyAWNbQ - has recently been published in Scientific Data - a Nature Research journal. 📃 The paper introduces MuS2 - a new benchmark for multi-image Sentinel-2 super-resolution reconstruction and reports the results obtained for several state-of-the-art techniques. Our dataset is composed of multiple Sentinel-2 images showing the same area of interest coupled with high-resolution reference images acquired by WorldView-2. With the SAXS beamline P12 at the Petra III storage ring at DESY (Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron), EMBL Hamburg develops advanced methods for the analysis of the X-ray and neutron scattering data. Modern mathematical techniques such as regularization, non-linear optimization, heuristic algorithms etc are employed for building three-dimensional models based on the experimental scattering data. Special emphasis is put on combining the results of SAXS with X-ray crystallography, NMR spectroscopy and electron microscopy to improve 3D model refinement. Want to learn more? 📃Scientific paper: Public Kaggle Competition "IceCube -- Neutrinos in Deep Ice" Abstract: The reconstruction of neutrino events in the IceCube experiment is crucial for many scientific analyses, including searches for cosmic neutrino sources. The Kaggle competition "IceCube -- Neutrinos in Deep ice" was a public machine learning challenge designed to encourage the development of innovative solutions to improve the accuracy and efficiency of neutrino event reconstruction. Participants worked with a dataset of simulated neutrino events and were tasked with creating a suitable model to predict the direction vector of incoming neutrinos. From January to April 2023, hundreds of teams competed for a total of $50k prize money, which was awarded to the best performing few out of the many thousand submissions. Unveiling Groundbreaking Data-Intensive Use Cases with IO-SEA! We're excited to spotlight the innovative work of the IO-SEA project, which our expert Sai Narasimhamurthy was deeply involved in. This time we highlight a cutting-edge application in Structural and Cellular Biology: the analysis of electron microscopy images. Cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM) is revolutionizing Structural and Cellular Biology by enabling precise 3D models of macromolecules from 2D projection images. CEITEC's state-of-the-art Titan Krios electron microscope produces an astounding 1-2 TB of raw data per day. Currently, this data is stored locally, awaiting advanced processing. Within the IO-SEA framework, the primary goal is to harness HPC and storage resources from IT4I to significantly enhance the processing efficiency of this raw data. This effort aims to streamline data publication, facilitating groundbreaking discoveries. 📃Scientific paper: Solar Jet Hunter: a citizen science initiative to identify coronal jets in EUV data sets Abstract: Context. Solar coronal jets seen in EUV are ubiquitous on the Sun, have been found in and at the edges of active regions, at the boundaries of coronal holes, and in the quiet Sun. Jets have various shapes, sizes, brightness, velocities and duration in time, which complicates their detection by automated algorithms. So far, solar jets reported in the Heliophysics Event Knowledgebase \(HEK\) have been mostly reported by humans looking for them in the data, with different levels of precision regarding their timing and positions. Aims. We create a catalogue of solar jets observed in EUV at 304 \{\AA\} containing precise and consistent information on the jet timing, position and extent. Methods. We designed a citizen science project, "Solar Jet Hunter", on the Zooniverse platform, to analyze EUV observations at 304 \{\AA\} from the Solar Dynamic Observatory/Atmospheric Imaging Assembly \(SDO/AIA\). We created movie strips for regions of the Sun in which jets have been reported in HEK and ask the volunteers to 1\) confirm the presence of at least one jet in the data and 2\) report the timing, position and extent of the jet. Results. We report here the design of the project and the results obtained after the analysis of data from 2011 to 2016. 365 "coronal jet" events from HEK served as input for the citizen science project, equivalent to more than 120,000 images distributed into 9,689 "movie strips".
