Experience does not equal skills. In a discussion with a friend, we talked about the difference of experience and skill. There are jobs that don’t require experience in the role, but they require a certain skill. And as an employer, especially in an industry like Virtual Assistants where it’s fairly new, I tend to look at skills rather than experience. If we’re hiring for an admin VA, I’m looking for someone with skills in email, calendar, file, and sometimes project management. This doesn’t mean I’ll only look at people who had experience being a VA. We’ve hired others who were secretaries, teachers, and even licensed engineers. They have the skills, but not necessarily the experience. And some even have the experience, but not the skills we need for the client we need them for. That’s why I also tend to look at how long they usually worked in a job. It differs per applicant, but it’s always a plus when I see someone work in a company for 2 years+, because they’ve been able to see the high and lows of a business. They’ve learned soft skills and not just the hard skills of working with people, and managing expectations. What do you think? Does experience equal skills?
