Do it the CTL Way

The "High School & Beyond Plan" set forth in RCW 28A.230.090 has so much potential to be something other than the "box-checking annoyance" it has largely become in many (most) of Washington's high schools. A major missing piece of the HSBP schema is relevance and value. Are these plans relevant to anyone? Do these plans deliver value? Go ask a group of high school seniors; better yet, float the question in the teachers' lounge. Here's a thought for Washington's 34 CTCs and 14 regional universities: Step into the void and make the HSBP relevant and valuable by: 1) asking high school graduates for their plans in addition to their transcripts, and 2) give students with strong HSBPs special consideration for supports and admission to competitive programs. If done well, higher education could ignite awareness of the relevance and value of the HSBP among high school students, their parents, and the high school staff. And, that's just the beginning: we've collected reams of data on ideas to turn HSBP into rocket fuel for secondary students.

Morgan Park Academy remains the top school in Chicago’s Southland area, one of the best in the state, and is among 2.5% of schools nationwide to merit an overall A+ grade, according to an annual third-party report released last week. MPA ranked No. 8 among Illinois K-12 private schools and No. 13 among the state’s private high schools. On diversity, long a strong suit, the Academy again earned the highest marks, ranking 16th in the state among most diverse private high schools. The report ranks schools based on a combination of data from the U.S. Department of Education and millions of school reviews and parent and student surveys. "Statistics and rankings aren't everything," Head of School Mercedes Z. Sheppard said. "But certainly, it's wonderful for our amazing teachers and our school community as a whole to receive this outside validation, and especially, to see such positive reviews from MPA families." An excellent initiative with proven positive results.

Washington, DC – The U.S. House Committee on Education & the Workforce today advanced, by a 28-2 vote, the bi-partisan “Stop Campus Hazing Act” (H.R. 5646). The measure will amend the Jeanne Clery Act to provide that institutions of higher education 1.) disclose crime statistics for hazing, 2.) publicly list student organizations found responsible for hazing, and 3.) offer a research informed hazing prevention program. It now advances for consideration by the full House.

CSBA is asking school district and county office of education board members across the state to help increase awareness and support for Proposition 2 — the Kindergarten through Grade 12 Schools and Local Community College Public Education Facilities Modernization, Repair, and Safety Bond Act of 2024 — by adopting a board resolution in support of the bond. CSBA has developed a sample resolution, available here: https://lnkd.in/et4z9Ube If passed, Prop 2 will generate $8.5 billion to fund facilities improvements at TK-12 public schools and another $1.5 billion for facilities upgrades at the state’s community colleges. School boards are critical to this effort and resolutions are one of the best ways to help demonstrate to the public that their board of education supports Prop 2. Please submit your district or county office of education’s resolution to CSBA by Oct. 11 to advocacy@csba.org. Resolutions will be used to help demonstrate the widespread support for Proposition 2 by those in the field.
