New product: 1960 Dunhill 320 FT Group 4 Opera Estate Briar Pipe To veteran pipe smokers, Dunhill needs no introduction. Beginning in 1907, Alfred Dunhill began selling Dunhill pipes at the tobacconist shop he owned on London’s Duke Street. Very quickly, these pipes gained the reputation of being the ‘Rolls-Royce’ of pipes due to how expertly crafted they were. Today, Dunhill is likely Britain’s most famous pipe manufacturer, and continues to produce some of the most treasured pipes a smoker can buy. Before the Black Briar (introduced in 1970) and before the Dress (1979) Dunhill explored dark brown finishes for their opera shape pipes. Instead of the sterling silver used to band the shank on the Dress finish pipes, Dunhill’s ‘London’ opera pipes used a different, more ‘organic,’ white material, as seen on this one. So as to not upset eBay’s algorithm, I will simply say that the ring is made from the horn of an animal that famously never forgets – and that, while this 1960 pipe is not prohibited for sale or use, if it had been made today, it certainly would be. Disclaimers aside, this is an absolutely beautiful Dunhill pipe, one that will fit easily into a breast pocket (which is what the shape was intended for), and which is unbelievably lightweight, at just 24 grams. It’s also an exceedingly rare pipe, one that collectors are likely to greatly appreciate. The condition is good. There’s some rim darkening and finish fading around the top of the bowl, but this won’t impact its smoking properties. Details: Length: 4.6″ / 116.8mm Bowl Width: 0.87 / 22.09mm Bowl Depth: 1.3″ / 33.02mm Weight: 0.8oz / 24g 👉🏽👉🏽Pipe Link: https://nuel.ink/q1SPjP #pipesmoking #pipes #tobaccopipe #pipesmoker #pipetobacco #tobacco #smokingpipe #briarpipe #briar #smoking #pipemaker #pipecollector #artisanpipes #mbsd

New product: 1976 Dunhill Shell Briar 41ED Sandblasted Opera Estate Briar Pipe, English Estates To veteran pipe smokers, Dunhill needs no introduction. Opera pipes are highly distinct in relation to other shapes, owing to their having an oval chamber, rather than a typical circular one. The origin of the shape, as well as the name, is debated among pipe historians, with one rationale for the shape itself being the ease with which it could be kept in one’s inside pocket. To my knowledge, Dunhill has had at least two shape codes for their straight Operas, the 320 and the 41ED (seen here), but even then, these pipes are exceedingly rare. All of the Dunhill Operas I’ve handled previously have been mid-century pieces, and all but the Black Briar iterations have had white bands, including this Shell Briar. The material used for white band on the mid-century iterations is assumed to be ivory, whereas on this 1976 one, I’m not entirely sure. I would suspect it to be Galalith, otherwise known as Erinoid, which Dunhill experimented with as a substitute for ivory after the latter was no longer used. The condition is great. Some inner rim darkening and residual oxidation. Details: Length: 4.6″ / 116.8mm Bowl Width: 0.86 / 21.84mm Bowl Depth: 1.24″ / 31.49mm Weight: 0.9oz / 28g 👉🏽👉🏽Pipe Link: https://nuel.ink/eDJ7x7 #pipesmoking #pipes #tobaccopipe #pipesmoker #pipetobacco #tobacco #smokingpipe #briarpipe #briar #smoking #pipemaker #pipecollector #artisanpipes #mbsd

Top Tips on organising a corporate dinner event Negotiate. Especially if your event is not happening on a peak date, such as a Thursday. Proactive venues will offer you a discount for a Monday & Tuesday, others will not. Put your table plan in alphabetical order, surname first! Ideally table plans will be in alphabetical order. We strongly suggest avoiding name place cards on the table. Scanning for your table in a sea of 400 names can be very time consuming. Think about tables! Round tables of 5ft or 5ft 6in are the best for social talking. Any larger than this and it is difficult to engage with everyone at the table. Don’t block heads with the wrong shape table centres. These should not act as a block across the table. Again this makes it easy for guests to chat with those around the table. Most good florists or light installers will appreciate this. Keep your guests entertained. Having some form of entertainment during dinner can lift the room and give it a shot of energy. Dance acts, opera singers, west end performers etc all work; it really depends on your audience. #Corporateevents #christmasparties

Fawlty Towers and Management “May I ask what you expected to see out of a Torquay hotel bedroom window? Sydney Opera House, perhaps? The Hanging Gardens of Babylon? Herds of wildebeest sweeping majestically...?” This scene from Fawlty Towers is one of my all time favorite comedy moments. The guest complaining she didn’t get a room with a view. The manager pointing out the sea. “Not much of view is it”.. then the classic quote above. Too often we expect employees to produce spectacular results when we have given them no margin of time or support. If we want great results, then as managers we need to make the proper investment into the people side of the equation. And in my experience that means making sure they have not just the physical resources, but are coming into the task with the right level of reset from the last task. If you keep piling one job on top of another, you will be lucky to get Torquay, never mind the Sydney Opera House. If you want spectacular results, make spectacular investments into supporting the people doing the work. #employeeengagement #checkingin #fawltytowers
