"It is not possible to “own” any space, only to inhabit it. A physical place is always just as intersectional as the people who live there. It is the politics of power that move us through physical space, and intersectionality means nothing if we forget to examine how it’s connected to our unspoken conversation with power. With that in mind, I wonder: what is on the other end of the “competitive space” fallacy? What brilliant benefits will come on the day we learn to share the earth?" - Rafiq Taylor

🌟 Acknowledging Brilliance
In a realm where words often fall short of capturing the vastness of space and the complexity of power, Rafiq Taylor's recent piece stands out as a monumental exception. It's not every day that one stumbles upon a writing so profound that it not only enlightens but also transforms how we perceive the universe and our place within its infinite expanse.
Rafiq has masterfully woven together a narrative that is as captivating as it is enlightening, shedding light on the nuanced dialogue between space and power. I was truly blown away by the depth of thought and the perspective Rafiq brought to the table.
I encourage everyone within my network and beyond to take the time to read Rafiq's work. It's a rare gem that offers a unique lens through which we can understand the intricate ways space converses with power. As we navigate our professional and personal lives, the insights within this piece can inspire introspection, and provide a powerful framework for transformation.
Please join me in celebrating Rafiq Taylor exceptional contribution to our understanding of these complex themes and uncovering the roots and the rich Black history of Little Tokyo.
Let's read and absorb what Rafiq has shared and pass it on. Share, repost, and discuss - let's spread the word about the incredible truths in this piece of writing.

What are the forces that move populations through physical spaces? What are the forces that keep them in place?
These are arguably the most pressing political questions we need to be asking, but too often they forget to be asked during conversations about conflict.
But once you know what I know about Little Tokyo, maybe you’ll be inspired to ask them too.

I compiled a list of videos for my East Europe class. The Good Authority added it to their good playlist series. This list could only include online free videos. A longer list of documentaries and movies (not available online) is linked through my website: Teaching on Eastern European politics? Haven't heard of the pan-European picnic? Have a history-buff teen? Need to learn something new today? This playlist by @pkostad.bsky.social is for you.

I'm a member of DOC - the Documentary Organization of Canada - and I urge you to consider this petition which is about the screening of a documentary at tiff last week. The documentary film had it's world premier at Venice, but was so loudly protested as pro-Russian propaganda by Canadian protestors that the deputy PM said the film should not have been made, "The Board of Directors of (one of the doc's Canadian broadcasters) TVO withdrew support for the documentary Russians at War, overriding its staff's editorial autonomy" and tiff suspended screenings for safety-reasons. It was a supreme act of disrespect. You may not know this, but the producers and the editor, not to mention the commissioning editors, have decades of experience, and the highest reputations. Their work has repeatedly tackled injustice. Their work is award-winning and critically-acclaimed. Furthermore, the documentary follows a long tradition of anti-war writing and film making, that focuses on the harrowing experience of the front lines, and the shared humanity of those in trenches. In Flanders Fields, the Christmas Truce, M*A*S*H, Restrepo... the list is very long. WHAT is going on in Toronto? What were the protestors thinking or not thinking? The Nobel laureate Doris Lessing, were she alive would say the protestors were brain washed in the echo chambers of social media. ( see her Massey Lectures, the Prisons We Choose to Live Inside (1985) for the cause and the antidote. Film festivals are an antidote. Festivals allow audiences to watch the creative work of individuals, and ask the filmmakers , 'why'? and each other, 'what did you think?' ( -- which is why the ticket prices at tiff are a problem.) The protestors of this film, the actions of TVO's board, and the deputy PM, made the conversation about censorship. Sign this petition. Find a way to see this film, and then talk about it.
Executive Director at Documentary Organization of Canada (DOC)
The Board of directors of TVOntario withdrew support for the documentary "Russians at War", overriding its documentary team's editorial autonomy. From Documentary Organization of Canada (DOC)'s statement:
"Independent media is the cornerstone of democracy, essential for ensuring accountability and informed public discourse. Documentaries bring critical in-depth perspectives that allow for nuance, context and reflection. Protecting the documentary creator’s ability to explore controversial subjects is vital for a healthy society. This action by the Board of a public broadcaster to censor content poses a serious threat to independent media in Canada. TVO’s decision risks setting a dangerous precedent and must be immediately reversed."
