[Google Play Cleanups] Every month, Google Play removes over 100,000 apps—far more than it adds. I consider this excellent news, as the mobile indie market is frankly stagnating. The competition is super high, organic reach is either non-existent or only appears with paid promotion, making regular iteration of the game quite expensive. I want to believe that this trend will continue, thereby partially reducing the competition for organic reach. Although, most of the removals are still related to violations of Google's rules. #GooglePlayCleanup #AppMarketTrends #MobileIndieStagnation #CompetitionInApps #OrganicReachChallenges #IndieGameDevelopment #AppStoreOptimization #DigitalMarketplace #GooglePlayPolicies #AppRemovals #TechNews #GameDevCosts #ReducingCompetition #AppIndustryInsights #PolicyCompliance #google #unity #gamedev #gamedevelopment #devhubgames #sushidiver

Hey folks! Google's fresh approach holds the potential for app developments. Key takeaways: 1️⃣ Google is changing its Play Store rules to allow real-money gaming (RMG) apps, opening up the possibility for a new wave of games that involve real cash. 2️⃣ Previously, RMG apps were only allowed in markets with pre-existing regulatory frameworks, but now Google is removing this requirement in select markets to start. 3️⃣ The new rules will come into place in June 2024, and while the apps must still be legal, they will no longer need established regulatory frameworks. Google will also be changing its service fee model for RMG apps. Share your thoughts on how this could change the app landscape.

Apple App Store and Google Play Store should introduce a feature for users/players to sign up to a developer's accounts and get notified on new app releases or announcements, through notifications or email. This would immensely help indie devs in getting organic traction for their games over some time. If you can ship a high-engagement game, players would love to play your upcoming titles and sign up for it. Developers would be able to directly convey important messages and releases. This is already happening through Twitter/Discord/Reddit, but Apple & and Google should think about making the stores more interactive from both ends. -------------------------------------- Join 400+ readers learning about ai/game dev: https://lnkd.in/dXc9JmWU #videogames #gamedevelopment

Decision is in: Google holds an illegal monopoly in the Android app distribution and in-app billing services markets! Jury found that: · Google possesses monopoly power in: - Android app distribution market. - In-app billing services market. · Google engaged in anticompetitive practices within these markets. · Epic Games suffered harm due to Google's anticompetitive actions. · Google's "Project Hug" and its agreements with game developers and OEMs were also deemed anticompetitive. This is seen as a significant victory for Epic and for other developers. Its just ‘Episode 1’ of the series as Google is expected to appeal, but the decision marks a crucial first step. The final decision of what Epic will ‘receive’ is in Judge’s hands and it is a very tough task to figure out which remedies make sense. #google #epicgames #fortnite #gamingindustry #gamingnews

𝙶𝚘𝚘𝚐𝚕𝚎 𝚒𝚜 𝚘𝚗𝚕𝚢 𝚐𝚘𝚘𝚍 𝚊𝚝 𝚝𝚠𝚘 𝚝𝚑𝚒𝚗𝚐𝚜 1 = renaming projects 2 =killing very, very popular, very, very influential, very widely used projects. Unfortunately, it looks like this week on the chopping block was people from the Flutter team. But I worry, because flutter, far and away, is one of the best tools for nearly native mobile development. Now, they haven't announced anything saying that they're actually going to kill Flutter, but any downsides in that team is definitely cause for concern. And fun fact, some of the best renames of different projects that Google has had over the years. Hangouts then became Google Chat, which then became Google Meet, which I think was renamed back to Hangouts. Google play music is now google YouTube music. Android tv is now, you guessed it, google tv. Android wear is now wear Os. #flutter #google 🎧 Music by V - "FRI(END)S"

In the last few weeks, I've received several questions about the marketability of mobile games, particularly regarding 𝐍𝐞𝐱𝐭 𝐝𝐚𝐲 retention rates. What constitutes a really good (and achievable) next day retention rate across different genres? 𝐃𝐚𝐭𝐚 𝐢𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐬 To address this, I'd like to share some insights. I've compiled data from discussions with many developers (thanks to my extensive network in the industry, built through past activities with Google teams in Europe, Brazil, China, Vietnam, India, and Africa), along with data occasionally shared by Google Play teams (ie. genre reports some time ago) At the attached chart, you'll find ranges for Day 2 retention rates (where the install day is considered Day 1) 𝐋𝐢𝐦𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐤𝐬 Of course from the start I will add a few asterisks: ✱ This is my personal view based on limited data points. Please treat this information with caution, as in some cases, it relies on a very small sample size. ✱ Typically, Android versions have slightly lower retention rates than average, while iOS versions have slightly higher rates ✱ It's important to note that game genres and subgenres encompass a wide array of titles with significant differences. Some genres and subgenres are less clearly defined. ✱ These are averages taken from T1 markets. In most cases, these rates will be slightly lower for T2 and T3 markets. At the same time, it would be great to hear any feedback: - ✅ Is it useful in this form anyway? If yes, feel free to reshare, comment, add "Like" - ✅ Do you agree or disagree with some of the points? It would be great to improve this based on your views and data #mobilegaming #mobilegames #data #marketability #gaming

Microsoft is launching a new web-based mobile game store in July, aiming to compete with the App Store and Play Store by circumventing restrictive app store policies. The store will feature popular first-party titles like "Candy Crush" and "Minecraft" initially, with plans to include third-party developers later. This approach leverages web accessibility to offer a cross-platform gaming experience without the limitations imposed by native app stores. The move also highlights the potential for cloud gaming as a distribution method. Although the initial focus is on establishing the store's viability, broader functionalities and third-party support will follow. #trends #ai #microsoft #it #dionezone
