This weekend I crossed over into a new decade! In celebration, I set up a fundraiser for three charities that I think are doing really effective work to tackle preventable diseases in the developing world, improve the lives of animals on factory farms, and provide mental health support for less fortunate communities. "(1) I support Against Malaria Foundation (AMF) because it is one of the lowest costs of saving human lives, and the Western world seems to have all but forgotten about one of the biggest killers in the world, one that we know how to solve! AMF distributes bed nets in Sub-Saharan Africa that stop mosquitoes from biting during sleep, dramatically reducing the rates of malaria. Malaria still kills hundreds of thousands of people every year, many of whom are children. (2) I support The Humane League (THL) because of their focus on improving the welfare of factory farmed animals, who have some of the worst lives on Earth, and who still form part of the the diet of most people in the UK. THL's corporate campaign programs leverage pressure against large corporations like McDonalds, The Co-op, and Lidl to get them to eliminate the use of cages in their supply chains, which helps stop the worst forms of abuse on factory farms. (3) I support StrongMinds because, having struggled with depression myself, it feels tragic to me that there are millions of people who do not have access to treatments that help brighten the darkness due to lack of available services. People who sleep under bed nets won't get bitten by mosquitos that carry malaria and heaps of other nasty diseases. Your entrance fee would protect two people from malaria for three years, and independent charity evaluator GiveWell estimates that for every US$3,000 to US$8,000 ($4,400-$11,600) spent by the AMF, someone who would otherwise die from malaria gets to live. The Mironid Mudders are taking on Tough Mudder Scotland on 15th June to raise funds and awareness for the Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD) Charity UK. We'll be put through our paces – 5 km of mud and 12+ hardcore obstacles – but we’re expecting teammate camaraderie to get us all over the finish line! At Mironid, we’re dedicated to developing new therapies to treat ADPKD (Autosomal Dominant Polycystic Kidney Disease) and other rare diseases. ADPKD is a debilitating inherited disease that causes cysts to form in the kidneys over time and leads to kidney damage and failure, at which point patients need dialysis or transplant. ADPKD is the most common inherited kidney disease, with 1 person in every 1,000-2,500 in the UK having ADPKD. The PKD charity is dedicated to improving the lives of individuals & families affected by PKD in the UK. Each year, 1.5 million lives are lost to #tuberculosis. In #Nairobi, Kenya’s capital, less than 9% of tuberculosis cases are reported, leading to preventable deaths. But here’s the good news: with proper treatment, patients can recover within just a few months! That’s why we’re working together with our partners on the ground to enhance tuberculosis detection and treatment by improving case reporting, especially among children.
